Sulphide-type phosphors are produced from pure zinc or cadmium sulphide (or mixtures thereof) and heating them together at about 1000 °C with small quantities (0.1-0.001 per cent) of copper, silver, gallium, or other salts, which are termed activators. [Pg.477]

Copper-activated zinc and cadmium sulphides exhibit a rather long afterglow when their irradiation has ceased, which is favourable for application in radar screens and self-luminous phosphors. [Pg.478]

The starting material for making these pigments is cadmium sulphate, which must be free from iron, nickel and copper impurities. Cadmium sulphide is precipitated from the sulphate solution by adding an alkaline solution of pure sodium sulphide under controlled conditions of pH, temperature and addition rate. The yellow product is in the cubic crystal form, which is converted into the required hexagonal form by calcination at 500-600 °C in the absence of air. [Pg.79]

Figure 4.13 A solid-state electrode showing a third-order response. An alternative modification to the electrode described in Figure 4.11 will permit the measurement of cadmium ions in solution. The membrane is composed of a mixture of silver and cadmium sulphides. The surface reaction between the cadmium ions in the test solution and the sulphide ions in the membrane will affect the equilibrium between the sulphide ions and the silver ions in the membrane.
