Gulf oil

The chlorination of aluminous materials in the production of aluminum chloride has been thoroughly investigated (2). The Gulf Oil Company produced aluminum chloride from calcined bauxite [1318-16-7] and coke from 1920 to 1960 (3). 

Propylene Disproportionation. A commercial plant utilizing the disproportionation of propylene to ethylene was built in 1966 by Gulf Oil of Canada Ltd. utilizing technology developed by Phillips.

Gulf Resid A process for desulfurizing petroleum residues, developed by Gulf Oil Corporation. 

Loop A continuous process for polymerizing aqueous emulsions of olefinic compounds such as vinyl acetate. Polymerization takes place in a tubular reactor (the loop) with recycle. Invented by Gulf Oil Canada in 1971 and further developed by several United Kingdom paint companies. It is now used for making copolymers of vinyl acetate with ethylene, used in solvent-free paints and adhesives. 

THD [Toluene hydrodealkylation] A process for converting toluene to benzene, developed by the Gulf Oil Corporation. 

Triolefin A process for disproportionating propylene into a mixture of ethylene and 2-butene. The reaction takes place at 160°C over a cobalt/molybdenum catalyst on an alumina base. Developed by the Phillips Petroleum Company from 1963. A commercial plant was built by Gulf Oil Canada in 1966 and operated by Shawinigan between 1966 and 1972 before closing for economic reasons.

About 1970, research was initiated under Air Force funding on acetylene-terminated imide oligomers (ATI) which could be thermally chain extended through the acetylenic end-groups (33, 34). This effort resulted in the development of HR-600 (Eq. 9) and subsequent commercialization by Gulf Oil Chemicals Company in the form of Ther-mid -600. Neat resin properties of HR-600 are presented in Table IV while preliminary composite properties are given in Table V.
