Guidelines classification

A vast variety of materials in diverse forms are used as filter media for which Purchas (1981) produced a guideline classification, which is reproduced in Table 2.1. Alternative methods of classification are available, but there always exist media that cannot be fitted neatly into the classification scheme. For example, Flood et al (1966) classified filter media into surface and depth media types. Surface type media are distinguished by the fact that the particles in suspension are mostly retained on the surface of the medium, with little penetration into the pores. Examples are filter paper, filter cloths and wire mesh. Depth type media, used mainly for liquid clarification, are characterised by the fact that the particles penetrate into the pores, where they are retained. All testing has to be related to environmental conditions whose characteristics must be defined. The relation of accelerated corrosion test condition to real service conditions is one aspect while another is defining classes of environment and relating them to characteristic corrosion performance in order to produce useful specification guidelines. BS5493 1977 is an attempt to do this using four categories appropriate primarily to the UK (Table 13.2). Such a classification is clearly an over-simplification, but represents an important step in this particular direction. 

As in Europe, the classification of devices plays a central role in the regulation of devices in the US. However, there are a number of differences compared to the European approach. First of all, responsibility for classification rests with the FDA rather than with the manufacturers. When the regulations were introduced, the FDA mandated expert advisory panels (classification panels) to consider the different types of device that existed on the market at that time. The FDA provided classification questionnaires to act as guidelines for the panels when assessing the devices. Soil surveys relating to construction work require samples from at least the depth of excavation water seepage may cause cross-contamination of land. The severity of pelvic pain and the incidence of infertility are not related to the localization of the lesions or to the stage of the disease (Gruppo Ital-iano per lo Studio dell Endometriosi 2001), as categorized according to the revised American Fertility Society (r-AFS) guidelines (American Fertility Society 1985). In fact, the r-AFS classification system is inadequate to express the severity of the symptomatology because it does not reflect the disease in terms of cellular mass or activity. 

Different classification systems are available to estimate the individual risk of presenting a cardiovascular event in the next 10 years. One of the most frequently used is the Framingham score risk, for which there is also software available online (Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program 2002), but recently several organizations involved in cardiovascular care have produced guidelines to identify and manage these risk situations (Mosca 2004).
