Instead of monomers, polymers in solution can be grafted on Nylon structures. Aqueous solution of poly(acrylic add) is used for impregnation of polyamide fabrics which is subsequently dried during 1 to 5hrs at 80-150° C after which cure is carried out for 15 to 60 min at 150-218° C (99). A copolymer of styrene-maleic anhydride is said to be grafted on polycaprolactam by heating at 230° C at a pressure of 25 kg/cm2 (100). [Pg.102]

Elastomers, prepared by free-radical initiated copolymerization of ethyl acrylate with cellulose to several hundred percent extent of grafting of poly (ethyl acrylate) onto cellulose, exhibited rubber-like behavior and second-order transition temperatures. Cellulose-poly (ethyl acrylate) elastomers had transition temperatures below —35°C, about — 20°C, and below 5°C when measured in ethyl acetate, dry air, and water, respectively (43, 44). [Pg.338]

There was a strong possibility that initiation occurred via photosensitized formation of hydrogen peroxide on the metal oxide surface followed by desorption and subsequent photolysis of hydrogen peroxide to form free radicals. Radicals formed by this means would lead to abstraction of hydrogen from the fiber surface and subsequent grafting of poly(methyl acrylate) at these sites. [Pg.256]

The emulsion polymerization in the third step is carried out in the presence of a water soluble monomer, such as acrylic acid. The radicals formed by the photolysis of HMEM (Fig. 6.18b) on the surface start radical chain polymerization by a grafting-from technique (see Section 6.13.3) thus generating chains of poly(acrylic acid). The polymer chains remain bound to the surface by an ester bond which can be cleaved by hydrolysis to obtain the polymer for analysis. Thus the molecular weight of the bound polymer chains can be determined which gives their contour length Lc. The thiclcness L of the brush (Fig. 6.17) attached to the surface of the particles can be deduced from the hydrodynamic radius as measured by dynamic light scattering. [Pg.405]

It appeared worthwhile to us to obtain further information on the contribution of the aromatic ring, first as stabilizing group for compact conformations, secondly as a site interacting in a peculiar way with dyes. In this approach, we considered that a partial grafting of L-phenylalanine (Phe) and some of its oligopeptides (Phe ) along the chain of poly(acrylic... [Pg.35]

The first successful result was seen in the grafting of poly(octadecyl acrylate) onto silica and its application for separation of PAHs in a reversed phase mode. The polymer is obtained by telomerization of octadecyl acrylate, initiated with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (Fig. 1). The following immobilization is carried out by mixing with porous silica in a suitable solvent. The resultant polymer-grafted silica shows, not only extremely high separation of PAHs, but also specific temperature dependency on the selectivity, which is induced by an ordered-to-disordered transition of the grafted polymer. The detail is described later. [Pg.1075]
