Graded quality assurance

As part of the USNRC s risk-informed regulatory initiative, low power and shutdown conditions should be considered by a utility when making a risk-informed regulatory submittal request for a change to graded quality assurance, in-service-testing, in-service-inspection, or technical specifications.

Materials. Aldicarb standards were obtained from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Quality Assurance Section and from Union Carbide Corporation. Crystalline samples of carbofuran and 3-hydroxycarbofuran were supplied by the Agricultural Chemical Group of FMC Corporation. Reference standards of methomyl (99% pure) and oxamyl (99% pure) were obtained from USEPA. HPLC grade methanol was purchased from Burdick and Jackson, Inc. Methylene chloride used for bulk extractions of the carbamate pesticides in solution was recovered, distilled and reused. Analytical reagent grade chemicals and solvents were used in all experiments. Doubly distilled deionized water was used for solution rate studies. Deionized distilled water (DDW) was used for dilutions in reactive ion exchange experim ts., , ... 

Over the last few decades scientist have developed sensory testing from the earliest individual examinations into a formalised, structured and codified methodology. Subsequently, sensory tests have become valuable, important and precise tools in quality control, which are equivalent to the physical and chemical methods used. However, sensory testing is not only a tool in quality assurance, but also in grading, product development and marketing, as well as for the correlation between specific chemical/physical properties of a food and the effect on the human sensorial perception. 

There is a demand for quality assurance of recycled polymers, not only for high-grade applications. The properties of the recyclate must be specified and guaranteed within narrow tolerances by the manufactures according to the needs of their customers. 

A set procedure for each grade must be set up and strictly adhered to. For normal quality assurance, the weights, temperatures, and times must be logged. The degree of sophistication of each plant can vary from a purely manual system to a computer-controlled, fully automated unit.

The Rubber Manufacturers Association has a further set of standards for quality and packing of latex natural rubber grades. Table 9.2 defines the eight types of rubber covered in their specifications. Here, coagulated latex is sheeted, dried, and packed into bales of up to 113.5 kg. Grading is by visual inspection. Quality assurance laboratories have sets of visual standards for inspections (The Rubber Manufacturers Association, 1979). 

Extant and planned collaborative research, related to nuclear materials safety and between the universities of the consortium operating the Amarillo National Resource Center for Plutonium and various Russian institutions of higher education, is outlined. The research includes activities in the following fields sampling of airborne radionuclides, transportation of hazardous materials, safe removal and processing of nuclear materials, quality assurance practices, and disposition of weapons-grade plutonium in reactors. 

Not all SSCs require the same frequency and extent of surveillance. The use of quality assurance principles enables the surveillance requirements to be derived in a graded manner such that the extent of the requirements is consistent with the safety functions performed by the SSCs. Account should be taken of the probability of failure to perform properly (PSA results can be used if applicable) and of the requirement to maintain radiation exposures as low as reasonably achievable. The frequency with which SSCs not normally in use are tested should be optimized, so that they can perform their functions satisfactorily when required and possible wear-out due to overtesting is avoided. In deciding on the extent of the surveillance requirements, systems may be classified in accordance with their importance to safety.

Tolerance limits for the aggregate grading and binder content of the produced AC in relation to the target mix for quality assurance are established by the agency, together with the procedure for verifying tests. 

Many different molecular weight grades of VP-based polymers, characterized by viscosity, are available commercially. The determination of viscosity is historically satisfactory for quality assurance purposes however, most physical properties of polymers are directly related to molecular weight. For example, the glass transition temperature and tensile strength of amorphous polymers are known to depend on molecular weight. The melt viscosity of polymers and the bulk viscosity of concentrated polymer solutions are also known to depend on molecular weight. 

Standard commercial grades of acid usually are suitable. Byproduct acid is widely available commercially, and it is important for the user to know his ultimate source and to adopt the proper quality assurance program. Troublesome impurities may include heavy organics, which can form chlorine compounds that remain with the product, and nitrogen compounds, which can form nitrogen trichloride (Section 9.1.11.2A). 

The WSRC quality assurance program is implemented within the Reactor Division on a graded basis as described in the WSRC PoUcy Manual (WSRC-l-Ol) (Ref. 6-17), "WSRC QuaHty Assurance Management Plan" (Ref 6-S8) and the WSRC (Quality Assurance Manual (WSRC IQ) (Ref. 6-28). Activities affecting quality, safety, and/or reliability of Reactor Division operations, products, and services are performed in accor ce with documented and approved procedures appropriate for the tasks to be perfoimed. Procedures are used to ensure that quality assurance requirements are planned and systemadcally implemented as part of the performance of the activity. The quality assurance program provides for the indoctrination and training of personnel, as necessary, to ensure that suitable proficiency is achieved and maintained tef 6-35).
