Since patient/market/legislative data have to be incorporated in modem product presentation, it is essential that the text remain legible throughout the shelf life. Printed material should be scuff abrasion tested, under agreed conditions, to meet visual standards of performance. 

The Rubber Manufacturers Association has a further set of standards for quality and packing of latex natural rubber grades. Table 9.2 defines the eight types of rubber covered in their specifications. Here, coagulated latex is sheeted, dried, and packed into bales of up to 113.5 kg. Grading is by visual inspection. One of the reasons for the tremendous success of plastic products in the consumer market is that products made from plastic materials are aesthetically more appealing in terms of color and feel than products made from other materials. The majority of quality control systems fail to recognize the importance of visual standards or guidelines. Quite often, too much emphasis is placed on measurement and testing of the product and not enough on the visual standards. 

A visual standards manual must include the basic definitions and explanations of recurring visual defects along with proper illustrations. Since it is difficult to qualify the visual defects in terms of actual measurements, such as gauging a diameter or wall thickness, some guidelines and accept-reject criteria must be established.
