The formation of 1,3-propanediol from glycerol by Klebsiella pneumoniae, Citrobacter and Clostridium butyricum, respectively as well as 2,3-butanediol by Enterobacter aerogenes and their recovery and purification were central issues as well. The production was partly performed in a 2000 litre reactor. Glycerol metabolism in these microorganisms was established. In addition the application of the diols was investigated. 

Disorders of glycerol metabolism include glycerol kinase (GK) deficiency (GKD) and glycerol intolerance syndrome (GIS). Of these, only GKD is well characterized and has a defined biochemical defect [1].

Glycosomes are membrane-bound microbody like intracellular organelles, which contain all the enzymes necessary for glycolysis, glycerol metabolism and fixation of CO2. The glycosomes also possess some enzymes associated with pyrimidine synthesis, purine salvage and ether-lipid biosynthesis [1,2].
