Adhesives and Glues

Dicyandiamide reduces the viscosity of certain coUoidal solutions. This property is of commercial significance ia the manufacture of glues and adhesives, ia the coating and sizing of paper and textiles, and ia the conditioning of phosphate drilling muds (see Petroleum). This action may prove useful ia other appHcations where control of viscosity is important (54).

By far the bulk of amino resins are used in the woodworking industry for the manufacture of chipboard, plywood and as general glues and adhesives. Melamine-formaldehyde is an important component of decorative laminates. The amount of amino resins used for moulding applications is only of the order of 5% of the total. 

Silicone polymers have one more remarkable characteristic. They combine well with various organic and inorganic substances, which makes it possible to increase their strength, elasticity and especially glueing and adhesive ability to glass, metals and other materials.

An advantage of this method is the fact that the amount of sample needed for analysis is of the order of 3-5 pg, depending on the type of polymer in the sample and the type of applied instmment. Its accuracy varies in the range 10-20 %. It is used in the study of traces of polymer materials such as paints, plastics, rubbers, glues and adhesive tapes. 

Vinyl acetate is polymerized to poly(vinyl acetate) (Problem 15.33), a polymer used in paints, glues, and adhesives. 

There are many other art materials that contain potentially hazardous substances. Melamine (2,4,6,-triamino-1,3,5-triazine) is obtained by trimerization of cyanamide or commercially by thermal cyclocondensation of urea at 400°C with elimination of NH3 and CO2. Polycondensation of melamine with formaldehyde produces melamine resins that are used as plastics, glues and adhesives. Cyanuric acid 15 (2,4,6-trihydroxy-1,3,5-triazine) was obtained by Scheele (1776) from pyrolysis of uric acid and was the first 1,3,5-triazine derivative known. Cyanuric acid is synthesized by trimerization of isocyanic acid and is tautomeric with isocyanuric acid 16 ... 

Prodncts and Uses Applications include gummed tape, cartons, blueprint paper, and printing plates. A ton of skins yields about 50 gallons of liquid glue and adhesive.
