Global Reporting Initiative

More recently, the concept of sustainability has been captured within the framework of the Triple Bottom Line, which companies seek to address in order to minimize harm resulting from their activities and to create economic, social, and environmental value. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is one effort to develop a triple-bottom-line reporting framework.

Reporting, and timing of reporting on sustainability, is about on track with previous results. In 2002, 36 percent of respondents published a sustainability report. Three of these used the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) as a guide for their report, and one respondent obtained external verification for their report. 

As a collaborative activity, the chemical industry should look to develop a common framework or standard for sustainability reporting and responding to stakeholder inquiries. As part of this effort, the industry should continue to monitor other emerging external reporting frameworks, such as the Global Reporting Initiative, One Report , and the Corporate Responsibility Exchange, which all seek to standardize reported information and may be helpful to both the industry and its stakeholders. 

Input from internal and external stakeholders is also critical to continuous improvement and our continued success. GSK actively seeks stakeholder involvement for its Plan for Excellence and its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. In addition, customer feedback is routinely obtained and helps to focus attention on issues that affect the public through the consumption of GSK products. GSK has also published reports of its EHS performance since 1992 and has continued to develop and enhance its reporting to align with many of the features recommended by the Global Reporting Initiative.

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines set a globally applicable framework for reporting the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of an organization s activities, products, and services. 

A strategic framework for chemical engineers is required, as for example suggested by The Natural Step2 (a good example) or the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)3. As a structured framework, the Natural Step is about the science, life cycle analysis (see Fig. 5). 

The movement of Responsible Care, started in Canada in 1987, has been adopted by a majority of chemical producers in the developed and developing economies. If extends to small and medium size enterprises, this will provide a good framework for sustainability ([7], and see also Chapter 4). The more recent development of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines a further process of environmental reporting and has increasingly gained acceptance world-wide. 

Until recently there has been no universal standard for environmental reporting. However, in March 1999, CERES launched the first draft of a universal standard at a London conference. This is to be known as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the CERES has worked on this in conjunction with a substantial number of the international organisations involved with guidelines.
