Germanium structures

The germaallene 194 was prepared by reaction of fluoroalkynylgermane 195 with tert-butyllithium at -78°C in about 85% yield.174 Elimination of LiF occurred at low temperature. 194 was the first allenic compound of germanium structurally characterized (Scheme 41). [Pg.165]

Nanostructured germanium structures with mesoporous channels running through them can represent a different form of framework materials with exciting physical properties. When bulk germanium is penetrated by a regular array of mesopore channels, nanosized walls can be created that can exhibit electronic and optical characteristics similar to those of discrete nanodots [33]. [Pg.135]

In the case of the monosubstituted amidinate complexes, a crystallographic study of 2c (Fig. I) confirms a monodentate coordination of the amidinate ligand to the silicon center. The C-N bonds are nearly equal. The Si-N bond (1.625(3) A) is remarkably short and indicates some double bond character [6]. The analogous germanium structure (Fig. 2), apart Irom the longer Ge-N bond (1.776(2) A), is quite similar. Though the N-H hydrogen atom has not been located in either case, it seems plausible that an N(2)-H functionality is present. [Pg.288]

Lead has only one form, a cubic metallic lattice. Thus we can see the change from non-metal to metal in the physical structure of these elements, occurring with increasing atomic weight of the elements carbon, silicon, germanium, tin and lead. [Pg.168]

It has a covalently bonded structure and is a colourless liquid at room temperature it is hydrolysed reversibly by water, all the germanium being recoverable by distilling the product with concentrated hydrochloric acid GeCl -P 2H2O — Ge02 -P 4HC1... [Pg.197]

Some physical properties of the elements are compared in Table 10,2. Germanium forms brittle, grey-white lustrous crystals with the diamond structure it is a metalloid with a similar electrical resistivity to Si at room temperature but with a substantially smaller band gap. Its mp, bp and associated enthalpy changes are also lower than for Si and this trend continues for Sn and Pb which are both very soft, low-melting metals. [Pg.371]

The invention of the germanium transistor in 1947 [I, 2] marked the birth of modem microelectronics, a revolution that has profoundly influenced our current way of life. This early device was actually a bipolar transistor, a structure that is mainly used nowadays in amplifiers. However, logical circuits, and particularly microprocessors, preferentially use field-effect transistors (FETs), the concept of which was first proposed by Lilicnficld in 1930 [3], but was not used as a practical application until 1960 [4]. In a FET, the current flowing between two electrodes is controlled by the voltage applied to a third electrode. This operating mode recalls that of the vacuum triode, which was the building block of earlier radio and TV sets, and of the first electronic computers. [Pg.244]

Whether these results will also have an impact on the theory of metallaallenes is difficult to predict at least for the compounds Cp (CO)2Mn = M = Mn(CO)2Cp, (M = Ge, Sn, Pb) a linear structure is established and also linear p-carbido complexes are known [198], Recently, a germanium compound has been synthesized which is directly comparable with 22. In this case, the starting material for the synthesis is not a monomeric base adduct, but a dimeric germylene complex which is cleaved by Na2Fe(CO)4 in pyridine to form 72 [199],... [Pg.37]

Thus we have shown that when s and p orbitals are available and s—p quantization is broken an atom can form four (or fewer) equivalent bonds which are directed towards tetrahedron corners. To the approximation involved in these calculations the strength of a bond is independent of the nature of other bonds. This result gives us at once the justification for the tetrahedral carbon atom and other tetrahedral atoms, such as silicon, germanium, and tin in the diamond-type crystals of the elements and, in general, all atoms in tetrahedral structures. [Pg.156]
