German Specifications

Dyes are affected by numerous regulations, the most important of which are listed in Table 8.5. Since the States of the EU are obliged to implement the EU regulations into national law, with the exception of the German specific regulation on water-endangering classes, national regulations are not listed within the scope of this book. 

Recent German specifications for nitration grade xylene require determination of the freezing point of m- xylene, which should not be lower than -52°C. 100% of the xylene should distil within 1-2°C. 

The British and German standards bodies have been particularly active in the preparation of specifications for plastics. The German specifications (75, 36) have been concerned primarily with electrical insulation, whereas the British (12) have also covered applications in adhesives, tableware, toilet seats, and the building industry.

If there are specific data germane to the assumption of dose-additivity (e g., if two compounds arc present at the same site and it is known that the combination is five times more toxic than the sum of the toxicitics for the two compounds), then tire development of the hazard index should be modified accordingly. The reader can refer to the EPA (1986b) mi.xiure guidelines for discussion of a hazjird index equation that incorporates quantitative interaction data. If data on chemical interactions are available, but arc not adequate to support a quantitative assessment, note the information in the assumptions being documented for the risk assessment. 

Among other specifications that the plant user will encounter are those issued by the German DIN 51517, and individual suppliers recommendations on the grades of oil to be used in their units. 

The specification of these later coatings is covered by the German DIN 30670 standard for steel tubes and DIN 30674 for ductile iron pipes. These standards note that some 1 mm thickness of polyethylene is required for corrosion protection alone, but to improve the mechanical load-bearing capacity of the coating, total thicknesses of 1.8-3.0 mm, depending on pipe diameter, are to be specified.
