The nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), used in the treatment of AIDS, provide interesting examples of clinically relevant noncompetitive inhibitors. The causative agent of AIDS, HIV, belongs to a virus family that relies on an RNA-based genetic system. Replication of the vims requires reverse transcription of the viral genomic RNA into DNA, which is then incorporated into the genome of the infected host cell. Reverse transcription is catalyzed by a virally encoded nucleic acid polymerase, known as reverse transcriptase (RT). This enzyme is critical for viral replication inhibition of HIV RT is therefore an effective mechanism for abrogating infection in patients. [Pg.59]

The interaction of soybean cyst nematode (SCN) with soybean (Glycine max) has been extensively studied in the United States. This system has been used as a model to dissect the genetics of nematode parasitism, mainly due to the tractability of classical genetic manipulation of the nematode. The remainder of this brief review will focus on the SCN side of the interaction with its host and the progress that has been made in unravelling the complex genetic systems controlling parasitic behaviour. [Pg.54]

I would like to describe our investigations, performed in collaboration with Jeffrey Miller. To begin, I will briefly outline the genetic system developed by Miller which permits a rapid, rigorous determination of the position and kinds of mutants induced in a particular gene by DNA damaging agents. [Pg.333]

Some of the materials and techniques used in molecular biology may attract royalties if used for commercial purposes. Vectors, host strains and off-the-shelf DNA manipulation methods are usually readily available for modest licence fees for research purposes, but additional licences would need to be sought (and fees paid) if these systems were used in a commercial process. Where commercial exploitation is planned, the researchers should be prepared to switch to royalty-free genetic systems and avoid the use of costly and potentially toxic materials, such as artificial inducers or substrates, as gene expression regulators. [Pg.103]
