General performance index

The effects of non-uniform distribution of the catalytic material within the support in the performance of catalyst pellets started receiving attention in the late 60 s (cf 1-4). These, as well as later studies, both theoretical and experimental, demonstrated that non-uniformly distributed catalysts can offer superior conversion, selectivity, durability, and thermal sensitivity characteristics over those wherein the activity is uniform. Work in this area has been reviewed by Gavriilidis et al. (5). Recently, Wu et al. (6) showed that for any catalyst performance index (i.e. conversion, selectivity or yield) and for the most general case of an arbitrary number of reactions, following arbitrary kinetics, occurring in a non-isothermal pellet, with finite external mass and heat transfer resistances, the optimal catalyst distribution remains a Dirac-delta function. [Pg.410]

Since this program is in the early stages of development, this chapter will discuss recent progress associated with a planned flight test of a military aircraft to acquire narrowband acoustics. The majority of full-scale acoustic studies have been performed to establish the environmental impact on a community by estimating ground contours to set Duration Index Levels. As a result, these studies are generally performed in Vs-octave bands. [Pg.246]

Judgment of steady state. The judgment of the time needed for the response to reach the steady state is generally referred to settling time 65, which is necessary in order to evaluate the required time for start-up operation. Attainment of the steady state was determined from the convergence of the < tal size distribution. This was done by the use of the performance index (e) which is defined as the change in the mass based crystal size distrunition in every 1 residence time. [Pg.173]

During the last few years process synthesis by algorithm methods have made considerable progress. The problem of chemical process synthesis can be stated as follows given a set of reactants with amounts specified, determine both the cost-optimal structure and the optimal design variables of each process unit that can produce a set of specified products. In general, the process synthesis problem can be expressed as a MINLP problem where the integer and continuous variables occur nonlinearly in the performance index. The mathematical form is ... [Pg.105]

In the optimization block, the control input applied to the smart structural system is obtained by minimizing a generalized linear quadratic (LQ) performance index with weights on the control moves. The performance index is given by... [Pg.67]

Soil classification and index properties tests are generally performed for even low-risk projects. Engineering parameters often can be estimated from the available in situ data and basic index tests using published correlations. Site-specific correlations of these basic values may allow the results of a few relatively expensive advanced tests to be extrapolated. Index tests and their uses include the following ... [Pg.174]

Pi/i has been selected as a basis for the evaluation of the performance index since it can be determined a priori and without any previous knowledge of the measurements. The parameters required for its computation are R, Q and Po- The measurement error covariance R is given by the quality of the sensors while the process noise covariance Q is generally more difficult to determine because one does not have the ability to directly observe the process. If an ideal process is assumed, where all variability sources are included in the model, Q = 0. Finally, the value of Po is selected to be equal to R (practical initialisation for the filtering process). Under conditions where Q and R are constant, both the estimations of P i error covariance and the Kalman gain ki stabilise quickly and then remain constant. Therefore, the asymptotic value of Pi/i can also be used as performance measure. In fact, when the Kalman filter is applied to a system that is continuous and dynamic, the latter is preferred, whereas when conditions reflect short lived batch systems the former is more appropriate. [Pg.373]

Furthermore, the position and the orientation of the robot base with respect to a fixed fi-ame have been expressed in the form of link parameters so that a manipulator global length, defined as a sum of all these dimensional parameters, has been assumed as an objective function. Thus, a general formulation does not differ fi-om the particular case with assigned location of the robot base. In addition, the proposed performance index is meaningful for optimization also from a mechanical point of view, since it has been shown to be significant for both workspace and inertial properties of manipulator chains. [Pg.145]
