General Education Board

Julian stayed at Harvard four years on minor fellowships, and then went back south to teach at the West Virginia State College for Negroes. His laboratory had next to no apparatus. He was the one-man chemistry faculty, laboratory storekeeper andjanitor as well (de Kruif, 1946). Julius Stone, Jr., a Harvard classmate and the son of a leading banker and industrialist in Columbus, Ohio, came to Julian s aid. With Stone s financial backing and a General Education Board fellowship, he went to Vienna (de Kruif, 1946) and received a Ph.D. at the University of Vienna in 1931. Julian considered himself to be only the third native-born black to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry (de Kruif, 1946). [Pg.12]

Initially the computers provided by the Computer Board were for research work only and not for teaching. However, that distinction did not persist into the late 1960s, and the computers became a general educational resource. It was not permitted that the computers so provided be used for university administration and, since they were required to provide an effective service, there were very strict limits on the extent to which the then burgeoning tribe of computer scientists were allowed to monkey about with the machines. [Pg.289]

The preferred education for a health system pharmacist is the doctor of pharmacy degree. A general practice residency is also preferred. Some clinical pharmacist practices prefer pharmacists with a specialty residency. The American Society of Health System Pharmacists for the past 25 years has adopted policies and provided programs to support these preferred education and training programs. When the criteria can be met for board certification, many health systems support clinical pharmacists in becoming board certified. [Pg.429]

The new gallery had a specific aim to give a general idea of the chief branches of chemistry (Board of Education 1931) and the development of chemistry from earliest times (Science Museum Guide 1937). But it was not typological in the manner of Pitt-Rivers there was no attempt to show the evolution of chemistry. With a new emphasis on history, it was clearly necessary to acquire more historic objects. However, this demand was not easy to fill and it was met by copies of prints of al-... [Pg.310]
