Gathering agent

Occasionally, a trace component that is too dilute to be measured is intentionally concentrated by coprecipitation with a major component of the solution. The procedure is called gathering, and the precipitate used to collect the trace component is said to be a gathering agent. When the precipitate is dissolved in a small volume of solvent, the concentration of the trace component is high enough for accurate analysis. 

Carriers. Trace amounts of uranium may be removed from solution by the use of gathering agents or carriers. The choice of a particular agent depends upon the conditions under which precipitation Is to be made and upon subsequent chemistry to which the precipitate Is to be subjected. 

The initial appraisal allows consideration of the likelihood of exposure due to the presence of chemical agents. When the conclusions of the initial appraisal show a possible risk exposure for the worker, more data are gathered taking special account of tasks with high exposures. If necessary, workplace measurements are taken if the input data are not sufficient to enable valid comparison with the limit values. 

Administration of 5-HTib receptor agonists increases waking time and reduces REM sleep. This is consistent with recent evidence gathered from 5-HTiB-receptor knockout mice which exhibit more REM sleep and less SWS than the wild-type. Moreover, 5-HTib agonists reduce, while antagonists increase, REM sleep in the wild-type mouse, but neither type of compound has any effect in the knock-outs (Boutrel et al. 1999). Unfortunately, it is not known whether these actions are mediated by presynaptic, postsynaptic or heteroceptors and therefore whether 5-HT activity is increased or decreased. It is also not helped by the limited selectivity of test agents.

The first step in risk assessment is to gather health-related information associated with an exposure. Ideally, hazard identification starts before there is significant use of the agent. The structure of the compound is compared with that of compounds with known toxicity profiles. Cell-based studies are often performed to screen for toxicity. Finally, animal bioassays and human studies are performed to characterize and develop a toxicity profile. Multiple health-related endpoints are evaluated to determine if the compound is associated with adverse effects. Advantages of animal studies include experimental control and accurate knowledge of the dose.
