The first step in the project was to perform an extensive set of experimental tests on the actual glass-filled PTFE that was used in the gasket. Specifically, uniaxial tension and compression experiments at different strain rates and different final strain levels were performed. Both the loading and unloading behavior was examined. A few select stress relaxation experiments were also performed to directly probe the stress relaxation behavior of the material. Examples of the experimental data obtained from these tests are shown in Figs. 11.13 to 11.16.

Figures 10-7, 10-7A, 10-7B, and 10-7C illustrate the general arrangements of most manufacturers, although several variations of plate flow pattern designs are available to accomplish specific heat transfer fluids temperature exchanges. Also, the gasket sealing varies, and some styles are seal welded (usually laser) to prevent cross-contamination. Note that Figure 10-7C has no interplate gaskets and is totally accessible on both sides, yet easy to clean.

The decision to retrofit or install new filters is influenced by plant-specific factors such as the condition of the existing filters, compatibility of the filters to retrofit, availability of space within the plant, etc. Bayer s analysis of the costs and benefits of the retrofit compared to the investment in new filters did not show a clear favourite either decision could be justified. With regard to the rubber lining, gaskets, hydraulic system etc., the Kellys were in very good condition. Because of this, the decision was made to retrofit two of the filters and to use them in a separate brine circuit for the new electrolysers, with a second circuit feeding the amalgam plant.

Note For pumps with flange and pressure ratings in excess of the minimum values in 2.2.2, the gland stud size and circle may increase. The material specification of all gaskets and O-rings exposed to the pumped fluid shall be identified in the proposal. O -rings shall be selected and their application limited as specified in ISO 21049. 

If pumps with axiallysplit casings are furnished, a sheet gasket suitable for the service is acceptable. Spiral wound gaskets should contain a filler material suitable for the service. Gaskets other than spiral wound, may be proposed and furnished if proven suitable for service and specifically approved by the purchaser.
