Diversity of topics

In preparing this textbook, I have tried to find a more appropriate balance between theory and practice, between classical and modern methods of analysis, between analyzing samples and collecting and preparing samples for analysis, and between analytical methods and data analysis. Clearly, the amount of material in this textbook exceeds what can be covered in a single semester it s my hope, however, that the diversity of topics will meet the needs of different instructors, while, perhaps, suggesting some new topics to cover. 

The range of applications of expert systems in science is very wide, limited primarily by the considerable effort that is often needed to prepare one. Typical applications include the work of Pole, Ando, and Murphy on the prediction of the degradation of pharmaceuticals 1 Nuzillard and Emerenciano s work on structure elucidation from two-dimensional NMR data 2 the work of Patlewicz and co-authors on sensitization 3 and of Prine in another area connected to safety, that of MSDS data.4 The number of publications runs to several hundred per year, covering a great diversity of topics. 

Professor Mark s story is told in three chapters by the Editor and four reminiscences by Rudolf Brill (whose association with Mark dates back to 1922), Hans Mark (his son), Linus Pauling, and Maurice Morton. The history of polymer science is given in separate chapters by the Editor, Robert Simha (who has worked with Professor Mark in two countries), and Carl Speed Marvel. One chapter by Charles Carraher gives an up to the minute report on the status of polymer education. The remainder of the book is a collection of reviews and previews of specific, timely topics in polymer science. Despite the diversity of topics, each area covered has contributions from Herman Mark.

Textbooks, by their very nature, are limited in what they can provide to the reader in terms of diversity of topic and depth of coverage. The coverage of Reviews in Computational Chemistry is very wide in scope. Moreover, we publish in-depth, didactic chapters that are more highly focused on an important computational method than comparable chapters found in encyclopedias or in traditional textbooks. We want this series to be a learning experience for both the novice modeler who has a basic comprehension of f)hysical chernsitry as well as for seasoned professionals who may be working in academia or industry and need to leain a new method quickly to solve a problem. 

One of the most difficult decisions that a textbook writer has to make is to select what material to cover and what topics to leave out. This is especially difficult in chemical reaction engineering because of the wide scope of the field and the diversity of topics that it covers. As the title indicates, this book focuses on the analysis and design of chemical reactors. The objective of the book is to present a comprehensive, unified methodology to analyze and design chemical reactors that overcomes the deficiencies of the current pedagogy. To concentrate on this objective, some topics that are commonly covered in chemical reaction engineering textbooks (chemical kinetics, catalysis, effect of diffusion, mass-transfer limitation, etc.) are... 

The diversity of topics covered in this book clearly shows the scope required nowadays, in terms of fields of knowledge and expertise, to enable the development of new processes and to the industrialisation and commercialisation of new intermediates. 

With such a diversity of topics, some overlap between articles is inevitable and, indeed, desirable. Each article is intended to be self-contained, but extensive cross-references are included to enable further information on particular topics to be found elsewhere in the encyclopedia. Even in articles where there might, at first sight, scope for duplication, it will be seen that each article has its own distinct perspective. For example, there are articles on ethanol, on forensic sciences, determination of alcohol in body fluids, and on food and nutritional analysis, alcoholic beverages, but it can readily be seen that the emphasis in each article is very different. 

The diversity of topics to which the Colonel applied his mind are reflected in the diversity of topics that currently engage the minds of his former coworkers, as reflected in this book. From another perspective, the wide diversity of papers the Colonel has published has another common thread - the lesson that theory can guide experiment that will enrich theory. The interdisciplinary nature of materials science and the central role of chemistry has been clearly demonstrated in this volume by bringing together in a cohesive way a wide diversity of topical areas which are of current interest in materials science.
