This proof shows that any approximate wave function will have an energy above or equal to the exact ground-state energy. There is a related theorem, known as MacDonald s Theorem, which states that the nth root of a set of secular equations (e.g. a Cl matrix) is an upper limit to the n — l)th excited exact state, within the given symmetry subclass. In other words, the lowest root obtained by diagonalizing a Cl matrix is an upper limit to the lowest exact wave functions, the 2nd root is an upper limit to the exact energy of the first excited state, the 3rd root is an upper limit to the exact second excited state and so on. 

A functional explanation for a particular trait does not stipulate by which mechanism within the organism a particular effect is produced. The function can be realized in physically different ways and the only relevant feature is that it must enhance fitness, i.e. serve survival and reproduction (Macdonald, 1992). Various causal factors can then be invoked to explain how the function is performed, although these factors cannot explain why the traits are present unless an appeal is made to selection pressure. 

In the first enzymatic step, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) converts phenylalanine to trans cinnamate, via a deamination reaction liberating ammonia. PAL can also convert tyrosine to p-coumarate, albeit at lower efficiency (MacDonald and D Cunha 2007). PAL functions as a tetramer of identical subunits, with two subunits combining to form one active site (Stafford 1990 MacDonald and D Cunha 2007).

Composites made with carbon nanostructures have demonstrated their high performance as biomaterials, basically applied in the field of tissue regeneration with excellent results. For example, P.R. Supronowicz et al. demonstrated that nanocomposites fabricated with polylactic acid and CNTs can be used to expose cells to electrical stimulation, thus promoting osteoblast functions that are responsible for the chemical composition of the organic and inorganic phases of bone [277]. MacDonald et al. prepared composites containing a collagen matrix CNTs and found that CNTs do not affect the cell viability or cell proliferation [278]. 

There are other important classes of symmetric functions, such as Schur functions. Jack polynomials, Macdonald polynomials, etc (see [54]). In [70], we shall discuss a geometric interpretation of Jack polynomials.

Let us consider a variation function where we have chosen n of the functions, /. We will then show that the eigenvalues of the -function problem divide, i.e., occur between, the eigenvalues of the (n + l)-flinction problem. In making this analysis we use an extension of the methods given by Brillouin[21] and MacDonald[22].

Note that already because of the approximate nature of present-day functionals it can be beneficial to introduce spin-dependent functionals as suggested, e.g., by MacDonald and Vosko (31).
