A schematic diagram of a heart-cut LC-LC system is depicted in Figure 5.4. For each material, two specimen geometries were tested in the laboratory. Several other changes that are supposed to slow down the reaction can cause runaway. In the case of ethylene oxidation, chlorinated hydrocarbons are used as inhibitors. These slow down both the total and the epoxidation, although the latter somewhat less. When the reaction is running too high and the inhibitor feed is suddenly increased in an attempt to control it, a runaway may occur. The reason is similar to that for the feed temperature cut situation. Here the inhibitor that is in the ppm region reacts with the front of the catalytic bed and slowly moves down stream. Whole-body dosimeters are processed post-exposure as follows. The whole-body dosimeter is laid on a table covered with fresh aluminum foil and is sectioned into various pieces using a solvent-cleaned pair of scissors. The whole-body dosimeter is usually cut just at the knees to provide two lower leg sections, at the waist to provide an upper leg section, at the elbow to provide two lower arm sections, at the edge of each shoulder to provide two upper arm sections, and across the shoulders and down each side of the chest area to provide a front torso and back torso sample. The two-dosimeter sections from symmetrical parts of the body are combined to form one sample and wrapped in aluminum foil prior to storage. We have found that it is essential to measure physical properties carefully. The solid fraction was determined in each case from the mass and thickness of circles cut to an accurately known size (using a lathe in the case of BOM). The thickness was measured with a micrometer. The mass was determined with standard deviation about 0.5% (from three weighings). On achievement of a band of compound running around the mill roll, the compound is cut off from the front of the mill and is fed up into a feeder unit which traverses back and forth before the two driven rollers of the blender. By this action the rubber is effectively randomly worked and blended as it passes from the blending unit back down into the nip of the mill. [Pg.196]
