The same Pt/SiC catalysts were poisoned by CS2 the hydrogenation of (+)-apopinene was used as an indicator reaction (ref. 14). The amount of CS2 necessary to eliminate the hydrogenation activity permits calculation of the fraction of metal sites active in olefin hydrogenation. Canfield (2001) undertook a comprehensive study of isotope fractionation by natural populations of SRB in sediment from a small marine lagoon located off the Danish coast. Recent work has shown that pulverized coal, if separated by gravity fractionation, can yield important information relative to slagging potential due to the iron content. (6,7). Results of this work have shown that the percentage of iron in the heavy fractions correlates very well to the slagging behavior in commercial boilers. (See Figure 3). This technique appears to identify the proportion of relatively pure pyrites particles that are generated in the pulverized coal feed and that are capable of melting at relatively low temperatures and that would account for enrichment of iron in lower furnace waterwall deposits. [Pg.297]

Distillation fractions of an oil represent the fraction (generally measured by volume) of an oil that is boiled off at a given temperature. This data is obtained on most crude oils so that oil companies can adjust parameters in their refineries to handle the oil. This data also provides environmentalists with useful insights into the chemical composition of oils. For example, while 70% of gasoline will boil off at 100°C, only about 5% of a crude oil will boil off at that temperature and an even smaller amount of a typical Bunker C.
