Forgiveness

A much more forgiving yet limited extraction method can be used to isolate phenol species such as eugenol and chavicol. You see farther back in this chapter where one can use dilute NaOH to remove eugenol from sassafras oil Well, why not use it to isolate the damn things for further research. It works like a charm ... 

The main example presented will be the alkaline-hypohalite method as it is the easiest to acquire the necessary chemicals. It Is of interest to note that the alkaline-halide method is much easier to perform, process- wise, in that it is more forgiving of sloppy technique. 

A chelant—polymer program can produce clean waterside surfaces, contributing to much more rehable boiler operation. Out-of-service boiler cleaning schedules can be extended and, in some cases, eliminated. This depends on operational control and feed-water quaUty. Chelants with high complexing stabiUties are "forgiving" treatments they can remove deposits that form when feed-water quaUty or treatment control periodically deviates from standard. 

They are forgiving they aeeept errors in installation and mistreatment more readily than other types of couplings. 

Simplify Design facilities which eliminate unnecessary complexity and make operating errors less likely, and which are forgiving of errors which are made (also called Error Tolerance). 

There are a variety of ways of accomplishing a particular unit operation. Alternative types of process equipment have different inherently safer characteristics such as inventory, operating conditions, operating techniques, mechanical complexity, and forgiveness (i.e., the process/unit operation is inclined to move itself toward a safe region, rather than unsafe). For example, to complete a reaction step, the designer could select a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), a small tubular reactor, or a distillation tower to process the reaction. 

It is inherently safer to develop processes with wide safe operating limits that are less sensitive to variations in critical safety operating parameters, as shown in Figure 4.3. Sometimes this type of process is referred to as a forgiving or robust process. If a process must be controlled within a very small temperature band in order to avoid... 

There are few chemical plants that are so forgiving that a control system or a safety interlock system is not required. Process engineers provide controls to assure product yield and quality and maintain safe operating conditions. This type of control system is a BPCS. The BPCS acts to alarm and moderate a high or low operating condition specified by the normal operating limits within the never exceed critical limits. The SIS is provided to shut down or otherwise place the process in a safe state if the BPCS fails to maintain safe operating conditions. A BPCS should not be used as the sole source of a process safety shutdown. 

All of these factors determine the stress experienced by the workers and the extent to which operational errors will be recovered before disastrous consequences have ensued. In this context, hazard identification techniques, such as hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), failure modes and effects and criticality analysis (FMECA), fault trees, and others are useful in making the process environment more forgiving. 

On the other hand, if one considers all of Mandeleev s many predictions of new elements, his powers of prophecy appear somewhiit less impressive, even to the point of being a little worrying. In all Mendeleev predicted a total of 16 elements, of which only nine were subsequently Isolated. As one historian of chemistry has wondered, how b it that weareprcpaied to forgive Mendeleev so many failures ...

Under these conditions, the tendency is to try to compensate as quickly as possible for the loss of inhibitor and either add treatment directly to the condensate receiver, FW tank, or FW pump. This usually is not a good idea because in many cases the physically compact FT boiler design is insufficiently forgiving and problems of surging (priming) and foaming occur. This typically leads to carryover of BW and also the development of water hammer. 

Problems associated with MTHW and HTHW systems resemble those of LTHW systems, although these are much less forgiving than LTHW systems when waterside conditions go awry, and they tend to receive more attention both at the design stage and in their daily operation. 

Under poor operational conditions, tannin chemistry is a particularly forgiving form of internal treatment because it tolerates FW with significant variations in quality. It is capable of delivering clean, corrosion-free waterside surfaces in many types of boilers, despite low FW temperatures, high oxygen levels, and hardness ingress. It is especially suitable for use in smaller facilities that do not have the benefit of full-time, trained operators, and under on-off, batch process, or permanent low-fire circumstances. 

STM can be operated in a wide range of environments a stable tunnel current can be maintained in almost any nonconducting medium, including air, liquid, or vacuum. It is also relatively forgiving for an STM operation to prepare a sample the main requirement is that the sample conduct... 

Bowen et al. [94] made a B-MFI membrane on a monohthic support. The pervaporation fluxes and selectivities of several alcohol/water mixtures were comparable to similar tubular-based B-MFI membranes, demonstrating the scale-up, although, for pervaporation, the quality requirements are much more forgiving. Kuhn etal. tested a multicharuiel high-silica MFI membrane for ethanol/water separation. The membrane was supphed by NGK Insulators and, also, in this case, the multicharuiel membrane measures up to its tubular counterparts [95] (Figure 10.8). 

The integral in Eq. (40) will be taken by the steepest descent method (SDM). The reason why we do not apply an analogous technique directly to the 5-function in Eq. (39) is not only because we want to get rid of the e integration, but also because the SDM proved more forgiving in terms of accuracy when used to approximate the 0-function, rather than the 5-function. 

In this volume centred around different disease processes, various basic mechanisms of free radical processes and injury are dissected.
