Forces of nature

Besides particles, the forces of nature play also a key role. In the past century four fundamental forces were recognized the gravitational, electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces. Of these the weak and strong forces are less familiar, because they are nuclear forces and their strength rapidly diminishes over all but subatomic scales. 

Several electrical scientists in the early part of the nineteenth century, influenced at least in part by their understanding of German natiirplnlosophie, expected forces of nature to be intimately connected to each other, and some of them spent extraordinary amounts of time looking for the relationship. One of these was a Dane, Hans Christian Oersted, who, after an exhaustive series of experiments, in 1820 found that electricity could indeed produce a magnetic effect. Further experiments by Michael Faraday demonstrated, in 1821, that by proper orientation of an electric current and a magnetic field it was possible to produce continuous motion in what soon would be called a motor. The scalar field that is the object of their greatest desires and most ardent research is called the Higgs field. It arises as a logical necessity in their grand unification of the forces of nature. However, the cosmic scalar field mentioned above is of a very different nature, for it is infinitely lighter than the Higgs field.

Quantum mechanics tells us that the forces of nature can manifest themselves as particles. Photons of light, for example, are the particles associated with the electromagnetic force. Such particles are not constituents of matter they have an entirely different character. The photons that are responsible for electromagnetic forces are never observed. They are emitted by one matter particle and absorbed by another before they can be detected. However, there is little doubt that these phenomena take place because there is ample indirect evidence that they do. 

There was a long way to go before the doctor, in the presence of serious disease, could do more than motivate the patient to be composed in the face of the benign or malign forces of nature.

Thus Feinberg s doubts about irresistibility call attention to a conceptual point about desire rather than to an awesome volitional power of human beings. The energy-based industrial and scientific revolution, which continues today, has given us massively magnified powers over the forces of nature. Disease has been reduced food and shelter have become more readily available transportation and communication have leaped forward. Over time, this progress has accelerated the growth of population and the consumption of food, timber, minerals, and aquatic life. Billions of people are now able to live lives of material splendor. With a flick of the switch, we can illuminate where and when we wish, heat and cool our structures, move about (physically and figuratively) with unbelievable speed and freedom, dispose of our wastes, treat our sick, and explore the universe. 

The method of acupuncture was originally developed on the theory that there are channels (called meridians, of which there are 14 to be exact) and specific points in the body through which mental, physical, and spiritual energy (which the Chinese call Qi, pronounced chee ) flows. When the flow of Qi through these channels and points is disrupted, the Chinese theorize that pain and illness result. In order to correct the flow of Qi, very fine sterile needles inserted into specific points of the body reestablish the flow of Qi and balance the opposing forces of nature known as yin and yang.
