Satisfactory 40% peracetic acid is obtainable from Buffalo Electrochemical Corp., Food Machinery and Chemical Corp., Buffalo, New York. The specifications given by the manufacturer for its composition are peracetic acid, 40% hydrogen peroxide, 5% acetic acid, 39% sulfuric acid, 1% water, 15%. Its density is 1.15 g. per ml.

The peracetic acid concentration should be determined by titration. A method for the analysis of peracid solutions is based on the use of ceric sulfate as a titrant for the hydrogen peroxide present, followed by an iodometric determination of the peracid present.3 The checkers found that peracetic acid of a lower concentration (27.5%) may also be used without a decrease in yield. The product was found to be sufficiently pure, after only one recrystallization from 60 ml. of petroleum ether (b.p. 40-60°) and cooling overnight to —18°, to be used in the next step.

Apples. The Rome Beauty apples used in the wash tests were sampled from trees that had received varying amounts of DDT mixtures in as many as six cover sprays. Duplicate or triplicate samples of 30 apples each were taken at random for the residue analyses from the fruit passed through each experimental wash mixture. Additional lots of 30 washed apples each were placed in cold storage for subsequent examinations. Unless otherwise indicated, all washing tests were run in a flood-type washer of recent design (a BADD washer with a heated prewash tank unit, an unheated main tank unit, a water rinse tank unit, and a velour roller dryer unit, manufactured by the Bean-Cutler Division, Food Machinery Corporation, San Jose, Calif.). Surface deposits of DDT were determined as described (10, 12) on samples taken just before and immediately after the washing treatments. 

Colorless, crystalline, anhydrous aluminum bromide supplied by the Westvaco Chemical Division, Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation, New York, New York, was used. When dissolved in dry benzene at room temperature with mechanical stirring, a perfectly clear yellow solution results, if the reagents are of high purity.

The necessary uniformity of dose can be achieved with appropriate backscattering techniques. Dosimetry systems are adequate to continue the program on a realistic basis. More techniques should be perfected. Handling aspects for large quantities of fruits present the major problem (7). Cooperation between experienced food machinery builders, users, and the beam specialists should be stimulated.

Sodium acetate is added to neutralize a small amount of sulfuric acid which is present in the commercial product. In evaluating the energetics of oxidizers, it is apparent that the perchlorate salts are more desirable than nitrate salts. Therefore one would expect that attempts would be made to incorporate the perchlorate group into binder structures. The study of perchlorate esters was not pursued when it was found that simple model compounds obtained from alcohols and perchloric acid were excessively shock sensitive. However, when the C104 group existed in ionic or salt-like form, these materials were found to be far less sensitive. Bell Aerosystems Corp., in conjunction with the Food Machinery Corp. prepared the polyethylene hydrazine perchlorates.

Another new and interesting polymer family, the Oxirons, are under development by Food Machinery and Chemical Corp. (13), These, too, are struoto-pendant prepolymers prepared from butadiene to which the epoxy functional group is introduced. Functionality may be of the epoxy or unsatiuration type. A typical prepolymer might be a material of a molecular weight of 1500. These systems are cross-linked with anhydrides, amines, and peroxides.
