The most efficient way to access FlyBase, BDGP, and EDGP is via the WWW, which requires a computer, a connection to the Internet, and browser software, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. The addresses (or uniform resource locators, URLs) on the Web to access the databases are shown in Table 28.1. 

On the other hand, the BDGP (which can be accessed directly from the FlyBase home page) is the best source for up to date information on molecular data from the genome centers, including ... 

Comprehensive listings of FlyBase and BDGP search tools are provided under the All Searches or Searches sections, accessed from the side bar or the top bar on FlyBase pages and from the side bar on the BDGP home page. 

FlyBase text searches are accessible from many different entry points the home page itself, the All Searches page, or the relevant data class page. In most cases, both simple and complex queries are available on the data class pages. FlyBase sections with searchable text include Genes, Aberrations, Clones, People, Stocks, Transposons, FlyBase documentation. News archives, and References (these data classes are described below. Scope of FlyBase Data Types). 

The result of a query will be a table of summarized results, including name, cytological location, accession number, or Bloomington stock number each name hyperlinks to a full report (described below for each data type under Scope of FlyBase Data Types). The results can be saved as a text file for import into any common spreadsheet software that can interpret tab-delimited files (such as Excel or Filemaker), or as a FASTA formatted file of the sequences for sequence analysis. 

Balancer chromosomes are described in terms of associated aberrations, visible markers, and any other mutations or transposon insertions carried on the chromosome. Balancer reports can be accessed from within an aberration report or via the Balancer Search tool, which can be found within the Aberrations Query form. The Stocks section of FlyBase also provides access to Balancer Search. 

A Reference report can be accessed using the Reference search tool or via a link from another object such as an allele or transposon. Reference reports include abstracts where available from PubMed and links to the article s full text where PubMed offers these. Reference reports include a tabular listing of genetic data recorded by FlyBase from that paper. References can be fetched in several formats including Refer/Endnote.
