The FlyBase home page includes a link to the Reference Manual. This manual describes the searches, content, and format for each data section, with an explanation of the crosslinks within FlyBase and between FlyBase and external databases. The Reference Manual is extensively hyperlinked within itself, to the files it describes, and to external resources. Each FlyBase data class provides a link, under Documents, back to the relevant section of the reference manual. 

On the FlyBase home page, the Quick Search facility uses a scrolling menu to define the data class(es) to be searched. Symbol field can be used for valid symbols or synonyms, and All text can be used to enter free text such as keywords and synonyms. 

The People directory of FlyBase stores contact information for Drosophila researchers. The information includes names, addresses, phone and FAX numbers, and E-mail and URL addresses. This information is primarily user-maintained, via the Update and Add facilities available directly from the FlyBase home page and in the People directory. 

Comprehensive listings of FlyBase and BDGP search tools are provided under the All Searches or Searches sections, accessed from the side bar or the top bar on FlyBase pages and from the side bar on the BDGP home page. 

FlyBase text searches are accessible from many different entry points the home page itself, the All Searches page, or the relevant data class page. In most cases, both simple and complex queries are available on the data class pages.
