We therefore consider a different reaction flow model as our basic targeting model—one that can address temperature manipulation by feed mixing as well as by external heating or cooling. The model consists of a differential sidestream reactor (DSR), shown in Fig. 6, with a sidestream concentration set to the feed concentration and a general exit flow distribution function. Radial density gradients in FCC and other large-diameter pneumatic transfer risers reflect gas—soHd maldistributions and reduce product yields. Cold-flow units are used to measure the transverse catalyst profiles as functions of gas velocity, catalyst flux, and inlet design. Impacts of measured flow distributions have been evaluated using a simple four lump kinetic model and assuming dispersed catalyst clusters where all the reactions are assumed to occur coupled with a continuous gas phase. The physics and modeling of turbulent flows are affected by combustion through the production of density variations, buoyancy effects, dilation due to heat release, molecular transport, and instabiUty (1,2,3,5,8). Consequently, the conservation equations need to be modified to take these effects into account. This modification is achieved by the use of statistical quantities in the conservation equations. For example, because of the variations and fluctuations in the density that occur in turbulent combustion flows, density weighted mean values, or Favre mean values, are used for velocity components, mass fractions, enthalpy, and temperature. A microscopic description characterizes the structure of the pores. The objective of a pore-structure analysis is to provide a description that relates to the macroscopic or bulk flow properties. The major bulk properties that need to be correlated with pore description or characterization are the four basic parameters porosity, permeability, tortuosity and connectivity. In studying different samples of the same medium, it becomes apparent that the number of pore sizes, shapes, orientations and interconnections are enormous. Due to this complexity, pore-structure description is most often a statistical distribution of apparent pore sizes. This distribution is apparent because to convert measurements to pore sizes one must resort to models that provide average or model pore sizes. A common approach to defining a characteristic pore size distribution is to model the porous medium as a bundle of straight cylindrical or rectangular capillaries (refer to Figure 2). The concept of a well-stirred segregated reactor which also has an exponential residence time distribution function was introduced by Dankwerts (16, 17) and was elaborated upon by Zweitering (18). In a totally segregated, stirred tank reactor, the feed stream is envisioned to enter the reactor in the form of macro-molecular capsules which do not exchange their contents with other capsules in the feed stream or in the reactor volume.
