FLOATATION

A floatation is the free, unbound fiber length of warp and weft threads between two or more interlacing points. Long floatations will result in a plain, even appearance of the fabric.

Neumann and co-workers have used the term engulfrnent to describe what can happen when a foreign particle is overtaken by an advancing interface such as that between a freezing solid and its melt. This effect arises in floatation processes described in Section Xni-4A. Experiments studying engulfrnent have been useful to test semiempirical theories for interfacial tensions [25-27] and have been used to estimate the surface tension of cells [28] and the interfacial tension between ice and water [29]. 

Solids may be processed continuously or semicontinuously by pumping slurries or by using lock hoppers. An example is the separation of insoluble polymers by floatation with a variable-density SCF. For liquid feeds, multistage separation may be achieved by continuous counter-current extraction, much like conventional liquid-hquid extraction. The final produces may be recovered from the extract phase by a depressurization, a temperature change, or by conventional distillation.

The modified liposomes may be separated from excess protein by gel filtration using Sephadex G-75 or by centrifugal floatation in a polymer gradient (Derksen and Scherphof, 1985). 

Hiraide et al. [68] used continuous flow coprecipitation-floatation for the radiochemical separation of cobalt from seawater. The 60cobalt activity was measured by liquid scintillation counting with greater than 90% yield and a detection limit of 5 fCi/1 seawater. 

The latter concept implies providing local life support systems for unfriendly environments. By now, Ukrainian scientists and engineers have developed a variety of processes for potable water treatment by adsorption, electrochemical oxidation, electrocoagulation, electro-coprecipitation, electrodialysis, electrofloatation, floatation, membrane techniques etc. Each family must get small units for water purification, air cleaning and removal of hazardous substances from the food as soon as possible, for it may take decades to introduce cleaner production on a national scale. Here, we should follow the example of Western business people who bring with them to Ukraine devices enabling a safe existence in this unfriendly environment.

TEM was coated with 6 nm of the random copolymer and 34 nm of the block copolymer. Annealing at 170 °C and exposure to acetic acid generates the desired nanoporosity. After floatation of the film on a dilute aqueous solution of HF the authors picked it up on a TEM grid. The fate of the random copolymer was not described. Water contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments were consistent with the migration of the PMMA chains to the top of the thin film to generate the desired porosity.

Density. The density of the polymer samples was determined by the solvent floatation method described in the literature (65). All these samples ranged from 1.24 to 1.27 and these results are reported in Table I. 

Figure 10.11 presents the sehematic flowsheets of potential controlled flotation separation to recover chalcopyrite and pyrite from a copper-sulphur ore. Flowsheet I is collectorless flotation of chalcopyrite and then collector floatation of pyrite. Flowsheet II is collectorless flotation of chalcopyrite and then sodium sulphide-induced flotation of pyrite. Batch flotation results are illustrated in Table 10.5. It is evident that both flowsheets are suitable for flotation separation of copper-sulphur ore. The feed ore assayed 0.38% Cu and about 6% S, the copper concentrate obtained assayed 18%- 19% Cu with a recovery of 89%. For sulphur concentrate, the grade is 37%-43% S with a recovery of 82% - 85%. Interestingly, flie grade of sulphur concentrate is higher using sodium sulphide induced flotation than collector flotation.

The skimmed oil Is collected and transferred to wet crude tank. Water from the SPI separator is discharged to induced air floatator. This unit is composed of four floatation cells. Each cell is equipped with a motor driven self-aerating rotor meonanistn. As the rotor spins, minute bubbles are generated ar.d oil and suspended solid particles attach to the gas bubbles as tney rise to the surface. Tne oil and suspended solids gather in a dense froth on the surface and are removed from the cell by skimmer paddles and collected in a scum tank. Then skum is pumped out of scum tank to the inlet of SPI separator by skum return pump. 

To enhance the effect of air induced air floatation, a chemical called coagulant is injected prior to entering the floatator. The treated water with oil content less than 10 ppm Is pumped to the disposal pit.

FLOTATION. A method of separating minerals from waste rock nr solids of different kinds by agitating the pulverized mixture of solids with water, oil. and special chemicals that cause preferential welling of solid panicles of certain types by the oil. while other kinds are not wet. The unwelled particles arc carried to the surface by the air bubbles and thus separated from the wetted particles A frothing agent is also used to stabilize the bubbles In Ihe form of a froth that can be easily separated from the body of the liquid (froth flotation). Do not confuse with floatation. 

The problem is to do optimization of the zinc ore floatation procedure, in a lab plant. The system factors are xj-pressure of gas for barbotation of pulp, at x2-time of extraction under pressure, min x3-consumption of butylxanthogenate, g/t and x4-consumption of blue vitriol, g/t. As system response, these parameters have been measured y,-quality of concentrate, % and y2-percentage of separation, %. The outcomes of simplex optimization are given in Table 2.220.
