The rubber compounds are sheeted to form the bonding and cover layers, using a Berstorff roller die extrusion plant. This is essentially a two-roll calender fed by a flat-die extruder. [Pg.237]

The antistatic properties of the step 2 product were evaluated by preparing tapes of blends with polystyrene by extruding in a twin-screw extruder using a flat die at 200°C. The contact angle of the tapes was measured using the sessile drop method and water as the measuring liquid. Testing data not supplied by author. [Pg.246]

The flat dies, or slot dies as they are sometimes called, are used to produce webs in a variety of processes. They all have an interior manifold for distributing the plastic and lips for adjusting the final profile of the web (extrudate). Some dies have movable restrictor bars for changing the manifold for proper melt distribution (Figure 17.10). All flat dies have flexible lips that can be adjusted by bolts to remove humps or bumps in the web s profile. Die lips can have their adjustment bolts push only, where internal plastic melt pressures are adequate to keep the lips positioned against the bolts, or can be push/pull for low pressure applications. Direct acting or differential thread designs (for minute adjustments) are available. Profile variations of at least 3% or less can be achieved with flat dies. [Pg.538]

A method is proposed for using chrome tanned leather wastes produced by the footwear and clothing industry as fillers in polymer matrices. A technique for processing the composite obtained by continuous extrusion is also demonstrated. In order to evaluate the technique, a series of PVC-leather fibre composites was prepared and extruded through a flat die to produce sheets. The process produced a leather-like sheet that could be used in several applications. The influence of the filler content on the processability and final properties of the composite sheets was evaluated. The tests revealed that the sheets were flexible and exhibited suitable water absorption levels for several applications in the footwear and clothing industry. Finally, the tests showed that this composite could be formulated and processed at high productivity levels and at a low cost. 28 refs. [Pg.128]

Figure 89 depicts sketches of typical pelleting machines. With the exception of the first method (a), which applies a flat die, all other machines feature cylindrical dies and operate in a very similar manner as roller presses. The general principle is modified such that the material is pulled into the nip but then is extruded through bores in the dies and often scraped off with a knife . Equipment types (b) and (d) represent directly the modified roller press principle. Machine type (c) uses a press roller located within the cylindrical die and therefore resembles ring roll presses (see Section 4.2.2.4.4). To improve the grip and increase densification force gear pelleters (e) are applied which are said to produce pellets of superior quality. [Pg.129]

Axial extruder Low, medium, or high pressure extruder with a flat die plate at the end of a barrel, the material is extruded in the same direction as it is transported by the screw (sj. [Pg.13]

The dome extruder, also called extended die extruder, is a hybrid between the axial and radial low pressure extruders (Fig. 8.29, see also Chapter 6, Fig. 6.4a.4). This design was developed while trying to find a way to make the flat die plates of axial extruders last longer. The latter tend to bend out when they are overloaded if, for example, difficult to extrude materials are processed. Geometrically, the best balance of forces happens on a sphere and the extrusion stresses are spread over a three-dimensional area. An additional advantage is the increase in production capacity even if compared to radial extruders. Although the extrusion area is smaller than that of... [Pg.261]

Fig. 6.5 -3 is the reproduction of a brochure from the 1920s describing screw extruders (Chapter 5, Fig. 5.10bl) and showing a flowchart for the pelleting of animal feed meal blends. Shortly thereafter, responding to the growing demand, flat die (Chapter 5,... [Pg.640]

Individual large extruders can produce more than 40 000 standard bricks per hour representing a capacity of about 80 t/h. More complicated shapes, required in much smaller numbers, are made on versatile, die-changer-equipped smaller machines as shown, for example, in Fig. 6.7-14. Lower duty, simpler machines are used during the manufacture of expanded day (Section 6.7.1). As depicted in Fig. 6.7-16, the product still shows that it originated from cut extruded ropes. A similar expanded clay material is made using pellet mills, particularly the heavy-duty flat die machines (Chapter 5, Fig. 5.10, b.2), for the manufacture of green clay extrudates. [Pg.705]

Moist particulate solid wastes, such as predried FGD gypsum filter cake, can be extruded (Fig. 8.20) in, for example, flat die pellet presses (4 in Fig. 8.20) yielding cylindrical agglomerates, which are dried and screened prior to load-out. [Pg.894]

Extruders that are most often used for the production of catalysts or catalyst carriers are screw extruders and flat die pellet presses (Fig. 5-lObl and b2. Chapter 5). Both machines can exert high pressures and are sufficiently rugged for the application. [Pg.1410]

Aramid films have been in development since the late 1990s by several Japanese companies including Toray, Teijin, and Asahi. As with fibers, aramid solutions can be extruded through flat dies to form films. The conventional wet process can be employed to produce unidirectional and bi-oriented films from isotropic aramid solutions. Production of films from anisotropic solutions requires unique processes as shown by the example of PPTA film. [Pg.1009]
