Five poisons

The Five Poisons, unrelated to the Buddhist metaphorical poisons discussed earlier, is a motif consisting of the centipede, lizard, scorpion, snake, and toad. They are incorporated into Chinese folk art, embroidered on clothing, appliqued to luggage, engraved on amulets, and otherwise used. Customarily this group is not viewed negatively, but serves, on the contrary, as a charm for neutralizing evil. [Pg.2744]

Fogels, A. and J.B. Sprague. 1977. Comparative short-term tolerance of zebra fish, flagfish, and rainbow trout to five poisons including potential reference toxicants. Water Res.ll 811-817. [Pg.769]

Drug overdose The incidence and nature of seizures after overdoses of bupropion XL have been reported in a study of 117 patients who presented to five poison centers in the USA [70. Seizures occurred in 32%, and the median dose of those who had a seizure was 4350 mg, compared with 2400 mg in those who did not. One-third had delayed initial convulsions, defined as occurring more than 8 hours after the overdose. This suggests the need for a minimum observation period of 24 hours after overdosage with bupropion. [Pg.34]

Most iron salts and compounds may be safely handled following common safe laboratory practices. Some compounds are irritants. A more serious threat is ingestion of massive quantities of iron salts which results in diarrhea, hemorrhage, fiver damage, heart damage, and shock. A lethal dose is 200 250 mg/kg of body weight. The majority of the victims of iron poisoning are children under five years of age. [Pg.444]

The common hemlock, Conium maculatum, contain five alkaloids. Power and Tutin found a similar mixture in fool s parsley, and a volatile alkaloid resembling coniine i.s stated to occur in certain aroids. According to Svagr, water hemlock Cicuta virosa) owes its poisonous properties to toxin and not to cicutine, a name sometimes used as a synonym for coniine. The toxic properties of hemlock juice have been known ftom very early times thus it was the chief ingredient in the poison administered to criminals by the Greeks. The leaves and the unripe fruits are the parts used in medicine. The following are the names and formulae of the alkaloids —... [Pg.13]

Soon after production began, TEL was held responsible for a high incidence of illness and deaths among production workers at both the DuPont and Jersey Standard plants. The substance penetrated the skin to cause lead poisoning. Starting in late 1924, there were forty-five cases of lead poisoning and four fatalities at Jersey Standard s Bayway production plant. Additional deaths occurred at the DuPont Plant and at the Dayton Laboratory. This forced the suspension of the sale of TEL ill 1925 and the first half of 1926. [Pg.550]

In 1883 Hertz was appointed Privstdnzent for mathematical physics at Kiel, and after two years became a full professor at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe. In 1889 Hertz left Karlsruhe to assume his last academic post as Professor of Physics at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University in Bonn. Five years later, following a long period of declining health and many painful operations, Heinrich Hertz died in Bonn of blood poisoning on January 1, 1894, a few months before his thirty-seventh birthday. [Pg.620]

Metabolic Effects. Severe metabolic acidosis with high anion gap and hyperglycemia was reported in humans after acute poisoning with endosulfan (Blanco-Coronado et al. 1992 Lo et al. 1995). In five of the six cases reported by Blanco-Coronado et al. (1992), the metabolic acidosis was corrected with gastric lavage with activated charcoal and intravenous sodium bicarbonate and diazepam. No further information regarding metabolic effects in humans after exposure to endosulfan was located. [Pg.92]

Three-way automotive catalysts based on palladium, rather than the more expensive metals platinum and rhodium, have long been desired. However, Pd is more sensitive than R to poisoning by lead (Pb) compounds [1-4], Consequently, widespread commercial use of Pd-based automotive three-way catalysts (TWC) was delayed in the U.S. until the early 1990s, by which time residual Pb concentrations in unleaded gasoline had decreased to negligible levels. The past five years have witnessed... [Pg.355]

The processes of nature cannot be hurried and most of the knowledge we have is relatively fragmentary. Practically every known agricultural practice is subject to continuous scientific scrutiny, with the result that periodic revisions are almost the rule. If our oldest concepts are so subject to change, how very little we must know about these five-year-old marvels. It is natural for everyone involved to be concerned with the possible hazards which may be incurred as a result of volume use of newer economic poisons. [Pg.14]

The growing concealment of medical data during this period meant that the problem of food product contamination by pesticides disappeared from discussion. Over three five-year periods (from 1970 to the middle of the 1980s), Soviet society was almost completely deprived of information on human poisoning by food products contaminated with pesticides. However, the trend itself did not weaken. [Pg.77]

Some compounds of the Group V elements are violent explosives, and some are deadly poisons. Yet your life depends on having two of these elements in your body. The five Group V elements are ... [Pg.67]
