Declining health

In 1883 Hertz was appointed Privstdnzent for mathematical physics at Kiel, and after two years became a full professor at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe. In 1889 Hertz left Karlsruhe to assume his last academic post as Professor of Physics at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University in Bonn. Five years later, following a long period of declining health and many painful operations, Heinrich Hertz died in Bonn of blood poisoning on January 1, 1894, a few months before his thirty-seventh birthday. 

Pulmonary hypertension develops late in the course of COPD, usually after the development of severe hypoxemia. It is the most common cardiovascular complication of COPD and can result in cor pulmonale, or right-sided heart failure. Hypoxemia plays the primary role in the development of pulmonary hypertension by causing vasoconstriction of the pulmonary arteries and by promoting vessel wall remodeling. Destruction of the pulmonary capillary bed by emphysema further contributes by increasing the pressure required to perfuse the pulmonary vascular bed. Cor pulmonale is associated with venous stasis and thrombosis that may result in pulmonary embolism. Another important systemic effect is the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, which contributes to exercise limitations and declining health status. 

Although his research activity diminished after these two major discoveries, Hess remained influential in the development of chemistry in Russia. His textbook Fundamentals of Pure Chemistry saw seven editions and remained the standard Russian text in chemistry until 1861. He remained active in teaching and mentoring younger scientists, until declining health forced his retirement in 1848. The use of dronabinol and marijuana in AIDS patients has been correlated with their drug therapy [128], Azidothymidine (AZT) and AZT-di-deoxycytidine therapy was not compatible with A9-THC or marihjuana as a declining health status was noted. However, all clinical indicators of pancreatitis (a common AIDS related disease) improved in dideoxyinosine-treated patients who were administered THC or marijuana. 

Charlotte, rid of her rival, hoped for a cozy life with Fritz and their two children, but it was not to be. As always, there was work, travels, and Fritz s declining health, which took him—alone—to various sanatoriums for periods of rest. At the end of 1926, Fritz decided to relax in Monte Carlo with his friend Rudolf Stern for nearly a month, leaving her to pass the Christmas and New Year s holidays alone with the children. To make matters worse, Ludwig got very ill during that time. 

Boltzmann s achievements in theoretical physics are all the more remarkable in view of the considerable opposition to his ideas and in view of his own declining health. He had increasingly severe bouts of mental depression, and he tried to commit stiicide several times during his hfe. Over the years Seibert s research interests evolved from tuberculosis to cancer research. Following her retirement from the University of Pennsylvania she became director of the cancer research laboratory at a hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. Li 1968 she published an autobiography entided Pebbles on the Hill of a Scientist. Seibert continued publishing scientific research papers until 1977, when declining health forced her to give up research. She was inducted into the National Women s Hall of Fame in 1990, one year before her death.

Frasch had been suffering for many years from Bright s disease (glomerulonephritis, an inflammation of the kidneys), which kept him at spas and health resorts in Europe. He was forced to retire because of his declining health. After a brief return to New York in April, he left for Paris in June 1912. Besides a brief visit to New York City and to Gaildorf in the summer of 1913, he stayed in Paris.

It is clear that an increased acidity of rain water can lead to accelerated loss of certain base cations, but there is insufficient reasons to believe that this alone could lead to declining health, for cations should still be retained within the nutrient cycles. There is nevertheless the possibility that the extreme acidity that can be occasionally encountered in cloud water may be such that permanent leaf damage, and consequent nutrient loss may result. Also an associated reduction in the ability of roots to recapture nutrients can be another possibility (Miller, 1986).
