Cooperation is imperative in this process, and education and outreach go hand-in-hand with consensus building. Community meetings are part of the process and an understanding of the First Nations cultural landscape is an importantasset. Some of the proposed protected areas also play in land claim settlements between the federal government and First Nations people. [Pg.422]

As the 1980s evolved, environmental justice groups developed in many different racial and ethnic communities African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Pacific groups, and the indigenous people of North America. The first National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals was initially released in 2001 and is based on analyses of NHANES biomonitoring data on exposure to chemicals. The data have various uses to determine which chemicals people are exposed to and at what concentrations to establish reference ranges for assessing whether an individual or group has an unusually high exposure, including susceptible populations, such as children, the elderly, and women of childbearing age to track exposure trends to assess the effectiveness of public-health efforts to reduce exposure of Americans to specific chemicals and to set priorities for research on human health effects (CDC 2005). [Pg.74]

A number of epidemiological as well as experimental and clinical studies have suggested that primary hypertension might be related to an inadequate intake of calcium (for a review, see McCarron et al. 1990). So, if clients in public-sector treatment programs are improving as a result of whatever level of services they receive, what problems exist with this situation First, many people who need treatment do not get it. The reasons given by these people were— not ready to stop using (41 percent), cost/insurance barriers (33 percent), the stigma of alcohol and drug problems (nearly 20 percent), able to handle the problem without treatment (17 percent), access barriers other than... [Pg.132]

Iceland, an island nation with abundant hydroelectric and geothermal power sources close to where people live, is using natural power sources to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen. In April 2003, Iceland opened its first hydrogen filling station for fuel-cell vehicles. If this initiative proves successful, perhaps the rest of the industrialized world will eventually convert to a hydrogen-fueled economy. [Pg.352]

Following the successful formation of the People s Republic of China, the government of China carried out the first, second and third five-year programs and achieved considerable success. Through the Great Cultural Revolution, which began in 1966, and the Ninth National Convention of the Chinese Communist Party, the nation s economy was steered onto a path toward stabilization. [Pg.320]

This pattern began to change around the 1920s in response to three important developments. First, the United States became more urbanized. By 1920, for the first time in the nation s history, more people lived in urban areas (about 55 million) than in rural areas (about 50 million). The volume of solid wastes produced in cities and towns increased proportionally, and simple recycling systems of two decades earlier were more difficult to sustain. [Pg.148]
