A nonprofit association of insurance companies that provides services for participating companies. It provides statistical, actuarial, and underwriting information for numerous affiliated insurance companies and more than a dozen lines of insurance. It maintains one of the largest private databases in the world for insurance premiums and losses paid. Included in these lines is liability, automobile, boiler and machinery, homeowners, farm, and commercial fire insurance. ISO is a voluntary, nonprofit, unincorporated association of insurers. Previous to 1971, the functions performed by ISO were undertaken by various insurance organizations in different states. ISO gathers data that are used to establish rates for fire protection policies for residential and commercial properties. ISO developed the municipal grading schedule, which is commonly used to establish a basis of insurance rates for municipalities. It is an evaluation of the fire protection features of cities and towns based on seven factors climatic conditions, water supply, fire department, fire service communications, fire safety control, building codes, and a survey report. [Pg.169]

The first step in the procedure is to conceptually divide the process into separate process units. A process unit is a single pump, a reactor, or a storage tank. A large process results in hundreds of individual units. It is not practical to apply the fire and explosion index to all these units. The usual approach is to select only the units that experience shows to have the highest likelihood of a hazard. A process safety checklist or hazards survey is frequently used to select the most hazardous units for further analysis. [Pg.437]

Strength Habitability surveys conducted at CP (command post) upon arrival of Haz-Mat team. EPA conducted surveys at CP upon their arrival. SRS (Savannah River Site) and Richmond County Haz-Mat resources arrived on scene within a timely manner and were designated by FDIC (Fire Department Incident Commander) to be responsible for Haz-Mat operations. Haz-Mat personnel assisted in CP location determination. EPA utilized Coast Guard Gulf Coast Strike Team to provide monitoring and on scene response. By comparing consist (a list of all the cars in the train which describes their position in the train, type, contents, destination, etc.) to entry team visual inspection, chemicals involved were accurately identified. Written response plan and safety procedures implemented for Haz-Mat operations. Briefings provided to Haz-Mat responders by Safety Officer on entry considerations maps were covered for responders unfamiliar with the area. [Pg.9]

It is also useful to consider safety measures at the stage of the first literature survey. Table 1.5 indicates possible safety measures to be taken with reactive chemicals. The instructions on first aid in emergencies on Table 1.5 have been provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation 1 n, OSHA 1, Tokyo Fire Agency 101, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare 12. ... [Pg.21]

Some 121 firms completed the survey forms, for a sample response rate of 53 percent. The survey consists of 11 sections, covering the general safety record of the company, company and employee characteristics, management culture, human resource practices, safety practices, and safety consultation programs provided by the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MNOSHA) consultation unit. Table 2.1 summarizes the question items included in the 22-page survey. These 121 firms have matched with about 5,125 workers compensation indemnity claims for the years 1990 through 1998— that is, the claims were filed by workers of those 121 firms. Federal employer identification numbers were only available for about 10 percent of fire sample and have proven to be unreliable for matching. Hence, we used the name of... [Pg.29]

The safety of all workers on the job site should be a prime consideration. Potential hazards such as fires, cave-ins, and injiuies are the primary targets for engineering surveys. [Pg.875]

While safety manager, I received a call from Waldorf, Maryland, notifying me a store had been partially destroyed by fire. The details were at best sketchy, so I boarded our corporate plane immediately to survey the damage and report on the cause. [Pg.178]
