Foam use in regular fire-fighting, particularly in industrial situations, has been common for a number of years now. However, foam is a relative newcomer as a tool in combating forest and grassland fires. Wetting agents have been a standard in the field, used to "stretch" the available water supplies in situations where water is often at a premium. [Pg.450]

Tanks should be grouped so that no more than two rows of tanks are provided within diked areas separated by roads to ensure fire fighting access is available. Large tanks within a common diked area should be provided with intermediate spill dikes or drainage channels between the tanks, as an intermediate level of protection against spill spread. When a small number of small tanks are located together the level of major impacts is less and therefor the financial risk is lower. One thing should always be remembered. Under direct attack of the most severe fire, paint and many other forms of fighting fire have limited value. When a leakage happens, the chain of information has to be indicated, with telephone numbers, in order to call for help without loss of time. In most cases the upper management of an operation has to be informed as well, so that reference to the alarm plan would be useful. With chemical reactions - if not already described within the standard operation procedure - indication of safety measures are appropriate in case of deviations of temperature or pressure. In case of a fire, the instruction should contain information on suitable fire extinguishing agents, especially when water is not allowed for use. The site of the fire will present a number of significant and unusual hazards.
