A review on this topic was given by Finney in 1979154). As was pointed out by the author, at this time it was likely that at least some deviations of the hydration shell from that in solution would occur because there would probably be some remarkable perturbations of the hydration shell due to the interactions with neighboured molecules. Furthermore, the pH values and the salt concentrations necessary for preparing protein crystals are not identical with those under the usual conditions for native proteins in solution which could give rise to deviations in the hydration shell for crystallized and dissolved proteins. [Pg.28]

This area of research has only recently attracted the attention of synthetic organic chemists, but there has been a flurry of impressive activity in the area. Simple (i. e., unstabilized) carbenes suffer from many of the problems of nitrenes (vide infra) and most reported synthetically useful procedures use carbenoids the majority of recent reports have focussed upon reactions between a-diazoesters and imines in the presence of a range of catalysts. In one of the earliest reports of enantioselective carbene-imine reactions, for instance, Jacobsen and Finney reported that ethyl diazoacetate reacts with N-arylaldimines in the presence of cop-per(i) hexafluorophosphate with mediocre stereoselectivity to give N-arylaziridine carboxylates. Though the diastereoselectivities of the reaction were often acceptable (usually >10 1, in favor of the cis isomers) the observed enantioselectivity was low (no more than 44% ee Scheme 4.27) [33],... [Pg.130]

There have been some examples of the use of LDMS applied to the analysis of compounds separated via TLC, although not specifically dealing with polymer additives [852]. Dewey and Finney [838] have described direct TLC-spectroscopy and TLC-LMMS as applied to the analysis of lubricating oil additives (phenolic and amine antioxidants, detergents, dispersants, viscosity index improvers, corrosion inhibitors and metal deactivators). Also a series of general organics and ionic surfactants were analysed by means of direct normal-phase HPTLC-LMMS [837]. Novak and Hercules [858] have... [Pg.542]
