Maintaining hydraulic fluid within allowable contamination limits for both water and particulate matter is cmcial to the care and protection of hydraulic equipment. Filters will provide adequate control of the particular contamination problem during all normal hydraulic system operations if the filtration system is installed properly and filter maintenance is performed properly. The trays move forward with the cloth as long as the vacuum is appHed and return quickly to their original position after the vacuum is released. This overcomes the problem of friction between the belt and the trays because there is no relative movement between them while the vacuum is being appHed. The mechanics of this filter are rather complex, and the equipment is expensive and requires intensive maintenance. A range of solvents can be used. Widths up to 2 m and areas up to 75 m are available. The cloth can be washed on both sides. [Pg.396]

Modifications of the basic process are undersoftening, spHt recarbonation, and spHt treatment. In undersoftening, the pH is raised to 8.5—8.7 to remove only calcium. No recarbonation is required. In the first or primary unit, the required lime and soda ash are added and the water is allowed to settie and is recarbonated just to pH 10.3, which is the minimum pH at which the carbonic species are present principally as the carbonate ion. The primary effluent then enters the second or secondary unit, where it contacts recycled sludge from the secondary unit resulting in the precipitation of almost pure calcium carbonate. The effluent setties, is recarbonated to the pH of saturation, and is filtered. The advantages over conventional treatment ate reductions in lime, soda ash, and COg requirements very low alkalinities and reduced maintenance costs because of the stabiUty of the effluent. The main disadvantages are the necessity for very careful pH control and the requirement for twice the normal plant capacity. [Pg.279]

Large units (other than custom units) are usually built up of standardized rectangular sections in parallel. Each section contains on the order of 1000 to 2000 ft" of cloth, and the sections are assembled in the field to form a single filter housing. In this manner, the filter can be partitioned so that one or more sections at a time can be cut out of service for shaking or general maintenance. [Pg.1601]

Air-Filter Types Air filters may be broadly divided into two classes (1) panel, or unit, filters and (2) automatic, or continuous, filters. Panel filters are constructed in units of convenient size (commonly 20- by 20-in or 24- by 24-in face area) to facilitate installation, maintenance, and cleaning.
