The reprocessed blast-ftimace slag in the form of granules can be used as fillers for concretes, asphalts, and as additives in the production of cement, bricks and other building materials. As well, reprocessed blast-furnace slag can be poured into forms for the production of glass-ceramic tiles.

Because of its extreme insolubiUty, barium sulfate is not toxic the usual antidote for poisonous barium compounds is to convert them to barium sulfate by administering sodium or magnesium sulfate. In medicine, barium sulfate is widely used as an x-ray contrast medium (see Imaging TECHNOLOGY X-RAY technology). It is also used in photographic papers, filler for plastics, and in concrete as a radiation shield. Commercially, barium sulfate is sold both as natural barite ore and as a precipitated product. Blanc fixe is also used in making white sidewall mbber tires or in other mbber appHcations.

Polymer concrete consists of a mineral filler, for example an aggregate, and a polymer binder, which may be a thermoplastic, but more frequently is a thermosetting polymer (Figure 1.1).

In many countries, the largest market segment for the sale of limestone is as an aggregate in the construction and building industry. The major uses are in concrete and roadstone (both bound and unbound). Other applications include sand for mortar, rip rap, armourstone for sea defence works, land fill, filter media, pebble dash and roofing gravel. Finely divided limestone is used as an inexpensive filler for asphalt concrete. 

Silica fume. Silica fume (SF) is a waste product of manufacturing ferro-sihcon alloys. It consists of an extremely fine powder of amorphous silica. Average particle diameter is about 100 times smaller than that of Portland cement and the specific surface area is enormous 13000-30000 m /kg compared to 300-400 m /kg for common Portland cements. Silica fume shows an elevated pozzolanic activity and is also a very effective filler. For these reasons, addition of silica fume to Portland cement may lead to a very low porosity of the cement paste, increasing the strength and lowering the permeability. It is usually added in the proportion of 5 to 10 % and it is combined with the use of a superplasticizer in order to maintain adequate workability of the fresh concrete.

Diatoms are the siliceous skeletons of certain algae. These may be derived directly from an aqueous source, but may also be found in diatomaceous earth. Commercial uses for diatoms include safe insulation (usually older safes), as mild abrasives, filters, or as a filler in concrete, plastics, paint, and paper. They may also be encountered in certain types of soil samples. The presence (or absence) of diatoms, the number of diatoms, and the species of diatom can all provide useful information. 

Filler materials Furfurol(F). bitumen, and concrete. Alexandrov, et al. [27] confirmed the lifetime of Furfurol(F) as 100 years, in a project conducted during the period of the study. Carter [22] helped in assigning values for concrete and bitumen at 100 years as well, but without better information as to their makeup, these must remain as best estimates.
