Pollen ball samples were extracted from nests 5,10, and 27 days following sprays, for residue analysis. To minimise dependence on such equipment, collective protection is a prerequisite. Toxic-free areas can be established by means of a filtered air supply and the maintenance of internal over-pressure in all enclosures, whether buildings in fixed installations like command posts and air bases, or in military vehicles including tanks and armoured personnel carriers, or in modern naval vessels by internal citadels or in improvised field shelters. I have described Lifshin as a specialist in characterisation . This is almost a contradiction in terms, because the techniques that are sheltered under the characterisation umbrella are so numerous, varied and sophisticated that nobody can be truly expert in them all, even if his entire working time is devoted to the pursuit of characterisation. The problem is more serious for other materials scientists whose primary interest lies elsewhere. As Lifshin has expressed it in the preface to an encyclopedia of materials characterisation (Cahn and Lifshin 1993), scientists and engineers have enough difficulty in keeping up with advances in their own fields without having to be materials characterisation experts. Designation of a mental health coordinator is a crucial first step in the formulation of a team. This is the person who will manage the command center, decide what resources are needed, activate appropriate mental health agencies, and assign staff to locations such as neighborhood centers. Red Cross shelters (when requested), family assistance centers, schools, hospitals, and so on. This person also monitors field reports regarding the ongoing needs of victims, workers, and counselors, and adapts the plan as events unfold. 

PHNs must assure their own safety during a chemical event. After leaving the field, however, decontamination should be carried out before returning to the health department or home. For use in the field, a collective protector should be portable on muiur transportation and should be furnished in at least two sizes—one purifying sufficiont air for small gasproof shelters in the fonvard part of the combat area, and one purifying sufficient air for larger shelters in the rear ureas of the combat zone.
