Sedimentation field

There are four related electrokinetic phenomena which are generally defined as follows electrophoresis—the movement of a charged surface (i.e., suspended particle) relative to astationaiy hquid induced by an applied ectrical field, sedimentation potential— the electric field which is crested when charged particles move relative to a stationary hquid, electroosmosis—the movement of a liquid relative to a stationaiy charged surface (i.e., capiUaty wall), and streaming potential—the electric field which is created when liquid is made to flow relative to a stationary charged surface. The effects summarized by Eq. (22-26) form the basis of these electrokinetic phenomena. 

Sedimentation coefficients are a measure of the velocity witli which a particle sediments in a centrifugal force field. Sedimentation coefficients are typically expressed in Svedbergs (.symbolized S), named to honor The Svedberg, developer of the ultracentrifuge. One S equals 10 . sec.

Levels of total organic carbon (TOC) followed a gradient pattern, and ranged from 4.9% at the near-field to 0.7% in the far-far field (mean 3.1%), primarily due to historical fibre deposits. Oil contamination was present in the near-field and far-field sediments. Triplicate samples were collected using a standard Ponar grab and pooled. Field-flow fractionation (FFF) technology is applicable to the characterization and separation of particulate species and macromolecules. Separations in FFF take place in an open flow channel over which a field is applied perpendicular to the flow. Among the various FFF subtechniques, depending on the kind of the applied external fields, sedimentation FFF (SdFFF) is the most versatile and accurate, as it is based on simple physical phenomena that can be accurately described mathematically. Brown examined the aqueous suspension of pollen particles in the microscope, and found that the particles were in continuous motion. To rule out the possibility that the life cycle of pollen cells was responsible for the observed phenomenon, he conducted similar observation with finely divided matter of both organic and inorganic nature. These experiments confirmed the existence of chaotic motion, which could be observed with highly crumbled matter of any nature. Further in this chapter we will return to the discussion of the theory of Brownian motion, but first let us address the macroscopic laws that govern particle motion in the gravity field (sedimentation) and during diffusion.
