Spinnerette Process. The basic spinning process is similar to the production of continuous filament yams and utilizes similar extmder conditions for a given polymer (17). Fibers are formed as the molten polymer exits the >100 tiny holes (ca 0.2 mm) of each spinnerette where it is quenched by chilled air. Because a key objective of the process is to produce a relatively wide (eg, 3 m) web, individual spinnerettes are placed side by side in order that sufficient fibers be generated across the width. This entire grouping of spinnerettes is often called a block or bank, and in commercial production it is common for two or more blocks to be used in tandem in order to increase the coverage and uniformity of laydown of the fibers in the web. [Pg.165]

The property of mesophase that makes it suitable for carbon fiber and premium coke manufacture is that it forms ordered stmctures under stress which persist following carbonization. However, most carbon fiber production in the 1990s is based on polyacrylonitrile (PAN). [Pg.348]

Because of their unique blend of properties, composites reinforced with high performance carbon fibers find use in many structural applications. However, it is possible to produce carbon fibers with very different properties, depending on the precursor used and processing conditions employed. Commercially, continuous high performance carbon fibers currently are formed from two precursor fibers, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and mesophase pitch. Characteristic of the microstructure of PET fibers in their final production form is the occurrence of three types of polymer phases crystalline, mesomorphous, and amorphous. Nitropyrene was the sole product formed from the gas-phase reaction of pyrene with OH radicals in a NOx atmosphere (Arey et al, 1986). Pyrene adsorbed on glass fiber filters reacted rapidly with N2O5 to form 1-nitropyrene. When pyrene was exposed to nitrogen dioxide, no reaction occurred. However, in the presence of nitric acid, nitrated compounds were produced (Yokley et al, 1985). Ozonation of water containing pyrene (10-200 pg/L) yielded short-chain aliphatic compounds as the major products (Corless et al, 1990). A monochlorinated pyrene was the major product formed during the chlorination of pyrene in aqueous solutions. At pH 4, the reported half-lives at chlorine concentrations of 0.6 and 10 mg/L were 8.8 and <0.2 h, respectively (Mori et al, 1991). [Pg.993]

Cellulose acetate fibers are defined by the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act as manufactured fibers in which the fiber-forming substance is cellulose acetate in which not less than 92% of the hydroxyl groups are acetylated.
