Fatigue causes

The main causes of failure in gear couplings are wear or surface fatigue caused by lack of lubricant, incorrect lubrication, or excessive surface stresses. Component fracture caused by overload or fatigue is generally of secondary importance. 

Low-frequency noise (in the range 3-50 Hz) may have other injurious effects on the body. Research has also indicated that a type of fatigue caused by low-frequency noise has a similar effect to that caused by alcohol. Infrasound (low-frequency sound) also has a synergistic effect with alcohol. Low-frequency noise is particularly important in the case of workers operating machinery (e.g. vehicles, cranes, etc.). It must also be remembered that very high power levels may be generated at low frequency and may not be readily detected by the ear. Attenuation of low-frequency noise is very difficult (see Section 42.7).

B. The sleep disturbance (or associated daytime fatigue) causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. 

Driver fatigue causes 30%-40% of all large truck accidents.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 100,000 car crashes each year are caused by drowsy drivers, resulting in at least 1,550 deaths and 40,000 injuries. These accidents are obviously not limited to just the transportation industry, but rather to the population as a whole. No matter the circumstances, it is clear that the inattentive driving that fatigue causes results in injuries and death. 

Managers need to satisfy themselves that drivers will not be put at risk from fatigue caused by driving excessive distances without appropriate breaks. Combining driving with other methods of transport may make it possible for long road journeys to be eliminated or reduced. Employees should not be asked to work an exceptionally long day.

Wear, scoring, material flow, pitting, fracture, creep, and fatigue cause plastic and metal gears to fail. Continuous lubrication can increase the allowable bending stress by a factor of at least 1.5. However there are plastics (acetals, nylons, fluoropolymers, and others) that operate efficiently with no lubrication. There are plastics with wear resistance and durability of plastic gears makes them exceptionally useful.
