Examples of acid modified polyolefins are the copolymers of ethylene with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. Variations include the partially neutralised acid copolymers with metal ions (ionomers) or terpolymers of ethylene, an acid and an acrylate such as methyl acrylate or isobutyl acrylate. Acid-containing extrudable adhesives are widely used to bond to aluminium foil. Examples of anhydride-modified polyolefins include terpolymers of ethylene, maleic anhydride and acrylates such as ethyl acrylate or butyl acrylate and the anhydride-grafted polyolefins. Some typical applications and stmctures of a variety of multilayer materials with extruded polymer tie-layer adhesives, as described in Du-Pont trade literature, are detailed in Table 16.2. [Pg.350]

In general, extruders are located as close to the feedblock or multimanifold die as possible to minimize the length of transfer lines (which connect the extruder to the feedblock or die) and so reduce the residence time of the melt. Typically, th extruder located closest to the feedblock contains the heat-sensitive polymer. Adhesive resins tend to cross-link if their residence time is too long. The barrier resin, poly(vinylidene chloride), is also heat sensitive. [Pg.392]

In terms of processing there is no need for pre-drying PCHE granules, a standard extruder screw as used for polycarbonate may be used and discs are said to release well from the mould. Thermal aging is another simple pretreatment process that can effectively improve adhesion properties of polymers. Polyethylene becomes wettable and bondable by exposing to a blast of hot ( 500°C) air [47]. Instead of the simultaneously extmded polymer film, a pre-extmded or laminated film can be laminated on the substrate (e.g., paper or paper board). In this case, the extruder can be used to extrude the polymer providing adhesion (e.g., Ecoflex ) in a thin layer between the polymer coating film or laminate and the substrate. Another option is to apply a dispersion or heat in the laminator (Fig. 10, 4) to obtain adhesion. Extruded explosive compositions contain a polymer which binds the explosive crystals together. The polymer acts as an adhesive and helps the explosive composition to retain its shape after extrusion. [Pg.147]

Extrusion Coating. In extrusion coating, a thin film of molten polymer is pressed onto or into the substrate. Coating thickness may range from 6.5 ua or less to more than 100 xm. In polymer lamination, a related operation, two or more substrates, such as paper or aluminum foil, are combined by using the polymer film as adhesive and moisture barrier. In order to coat a substrate, the polymer must be extruded through a narrow slit in the extrusion coating die by an extruder screw. [Pg.1141]

Chain functionalized polymers or graft copolymers are of great technological importance. They are used as compatibilizing agents for immiscible polymer blends (8) and adhesive layers between polymer-polymer co-extruded surfaces (8). Currently, of all polymers sold, about 30% are in the form of compatibilized immiscible blends (9-12). Next we discuss a few examples of chain functionalization. [Pg.604]

Multi-layer films can be produced, composed of different polymers. For each polymer a separate extruder is applied the extruders discharge into an accumulator, in which the separate streams are guided to their own position in the film. A laminated film can thus be made, in which one of the layers provides the strength, another one acts as a gas barrier, other layers promote adhesion and weldability, etc. This laminating process is applied with flat film extrusion as well as with film blowing. [Pg.219]

Fumed silica is often used in 100 percent solids, liquid polymers. With epoxy adhesives and sealants only a few percent by weight of the additive will eliminate common problems such as slumping and separation. The fumed silica also raises the effective viscosity of the base resin to prevent other components from settling while the extrudability or spreadabil-ity is unaffected. Also note that fumed silica provides a surface that is free of texture. This is important in architectural-grade paints and sealants. [Pg.167]

Coextrusion produces multilayer laminates in a single process step. Two or more extruders feed different molten polymers into a multi-manifold die which layers them directly, or into a modular feedblock which layers them before feeding them into the die. This is used primarily in the packaging field, to sandwich an impermeable barrier layer between two commodity outer-film layers, and often includes adhesive tie layers to bond the barrier layer to the outer layers. [Pg.671]
