Examples of acid modified polyolefins are the copolymers of ethylene with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. Variations include the partially neutralised acid copolymers with metal ions (ionomers) or terpolymers of ethylene, an acid and an acrylate such as methyl acrylate or isobutyl acrylate. Acid-containing extrudable adhesives are widely used to bond to aluminium foil. Examples of anhydride-modified polyolefins include terpolymers of ethylene, maleic anhydride and acrylates such as ethyl acrylate or butyl acrylate and the anhydride-grafted polyolefins. Some typical applications and stmctures of a variety of multilayer materials with extruded polymer tie-layer adhesives, as described in Du-Pont trade literature, are detailed in Table 16.2. 

U.S. Pat. No. 7,041,716 [74] describes a thermoplastic composite comprising a polyolefin such as polyethylene or polypropylene in an amount of 20-90% by weight, a cellulose filler such as wood flour in an amount of 30-80% by weight, a basic reactive filler such as glass fibers in an amount of 5-25% by weight, and a carboxylic acid anhydride graft polyolefin such as maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene in an amount of 1-5%.

CORl s are the prime machines for polymer blending and reactive extrusion [Brown, 1992]. They have been used as reactors for the addition polymerization (polyacrylates, SAN, S-MMA, PA-6, POM, or TPU) and for the polycondensation (PA-66, polyarylates, PEST, PEI). Polymer grafting (polyolefin + silane, maleic anhydride, acetic anhydride, etc.) as well as mechanical and chemical degradation of polypropylene have also been carried out. 

The attachment of trialkoxysilane functionality to polyolefins (HDPE, LDPE, PP) though grafting of vinylsilanes e.g. 40, 41) or silane functional acrylates e.g. 42) has been widely studied. The principal application of these materials is the preparation of moisture curable crosslinked polyolefins that arc widely used in the cable industry. Silane treatment has also been used for surface modification of polyolefins " and silane grafted polyolefins might also serve as precursors to graft copolymers.
