The approximately round shape and small size of the suspension beads is useful for some applications such as expandable polystyrene or as an intermediate for further compounding with pigments, other polystyrene beads, etc. Being round, however, they tend to roll, not only causing a safety hazard when spilled on floors but more importantly causing difficulties in some fabricating extruders and molding machines. Except for expandable polystyrene, beads are seldom sold as such but are extruded into pellets. [Pg.87]

Nylons belong to the class of polymers known as engineering polymers that is, they are strong, tough, and heat resistant. We can readily extrude and mold nylons to form a wide variety of useful objects, such as tubing, furniture casters, and automotive air intake ducts. Nylons are commonly spun into filaments or fibers. These can be used directly, or braided, or twisted to form threads, yarns, cords, and ropes, which may be further woven to make fabrics. In their fibrous forms, nylons are used in carpets, backpacks, and hosiery. [Pg.358]

Rubber fabricating operations include latex-dipped, extruded, and molded goods (LDEM), and general molded, extruded, and fabricated rubber (GMEF). There are an estimated 1385 rubber fabricating plants in the United States. [Pg.575]

Softening range data can serve as guides to proper temperatures for melt fabrication, such as melt pressing, melt extruding, and molding. They also are related to the product s thermal stability. [Pg.34]

Irradiation of polyolefins, particularly the family of polyethylenes, represents an important segment of the radiation processing. Polyolefins can be irradiated in many forms, such as pellets and powders, films, extruded and molded parts or as wire and cable insulation. [Pg.90]

As any of the degradation reactions depends on the presence of a strong base, it is evident that neutralizing the base supports to the stabilization of the polymer. Thus, after having extracted the polymer either by water or by diluted acids, and after having dried the polymer, the decrease of the viscosity is much slower than in the case of non extracted polymer (103) (fig. 4). This makes it possible to apply the base catalysed polymerization for the production of polyamides for extruding and molding purposes. [Pg.590]

Fluorosilicone compounds can be processed by the same methods used for silicone elastomers based on PDMS. They can be milled, calendered, extruded, and molded. A large proportion of fluorosilicone compounds is used in compression molding. Molded parts produced in large series are made by injection molding, and parts with complex shapes are produced by transfer molding. Calendering is used to produce thin sheets and for coating of textiles and other substrates. [Pg.114]

Silicon rubber products are widely used in aircraft, automobile, shipbuilding and electrical industries, as well as in electronics, farmaceutics and medicine (mitral valves, etc.). Rubber compounds based on SKT, SKTV, SKTV-1 and SKTE can be used without hardening they are extruded and molded. They can function in any climatic conditions. The... [Pg.269]

Silicone rubbers are often used in the production of medical equipment. This happens because they are biologically inert, can help to produce transparent products, have no smell, are not rigid, can be sterilised and easily processed to manufacture various extruded and molded articles. [Pg.478]

Liquid crystalline polymers exhibit anisotropy in extruded and molded articles as a result of preferential orientation of LCP domains or individual chains. Reference (21 highlights some of the molecular structural features of LCP s that account for their fundamental anisotropy. These include the large aspect ratio of the individual polymer chains and their tendency to form aligned, highly crystalline domains. [Pg.382]

Available forms Extruded and molded products, oriented fibers, films. [Pg.1022]

Other physical properties increase in value proportionate to the increasing molecular weight of the polymer. The 3.5th power relationship of molecular weight to bulk viscosity rapidly causes a decreased ability to compound, extrude, and mold the polymer into potentially useful material. As a result, some compromise must be reached or some creative new avenues must be exploited to obtain the best possible material. Many of these approaches are apparent in this entry. [Pg.2260]

Several sections of this chapter discuss building materials (hoses and pipes, pavement, roofing, sealants, siding, and waterproofing). Here, we focus on wall materials and insulation in various extruded and molded profiles. Numerous polymers are used for these two applications. They include polystyrene, phenolic resin, polyvinylchloride, and polyurethanes for insulation purposes and polyvinylchloride, polyurethanes, and polyesters for wall systems and structural elements. The major methods of production include molding, extrusion, and pultrusion. [Pg.786]

The morphology of the fracture surfaces of both the extruded and injection-molded specimens was studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Although there were many morphologies across the fracture surfaces, highly elongated liquid crystalline polymer domains parallel to the flow direction were observed for both the extruded and molded specimens. [Pg.280]

Of the wide variety of other polyamides based on aliphatic diamines and dlaclds, few have been commercialized for fiber application. A number, however, have been developed for commercial application in extruded and molded plastics. [Pg.448]

U.S. Pat No. 6,578,368 [51] discloses a method for cooling extruded and molded cellulosic-polymer composites, among other plastics and plastic compositions the said method uses cryogenic fluid with a temperature below about 250° F, such as liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, liquid neon, liquid hydrogen, and liquid helium. [Pg.83]

All three commercial amorphous fluoropolymers. Teflon AF, Hyflon AD, and Cytop posses a unique set of properties. All dissolve in fluorinated solvents and thus may be spin coated to produce thin hlms and coatings. The polymers may also be extruded and molded using traditional polymer processing techniques. Note that the polymers are not soluble in hydrocarbon solvents or water and retain the chemical and thermal stability of perfluorinated polymers such as Teflon . These polymers have lower density than the well-known semicrystalline perfluorinated polymers such as pTFE that results in lower refractive index, lower thermal conductivity, higher gas permeability, and lower dielectric constant. The polymers are transparent and have excellent mechanical properties below their Tg due to their amorphous character. The presence of a heterocyclic ring in the polymer backbone of these materials is key... [Pg.502]
