Molds used for injection molding of thermoplastic resins are usually flash molds, because in injection molding, as in transfer molding, no extra loading space is needed. However, there are many variations of this basic type of mold design.

The use of microwaves in the foundry industry for drying and polymerizing the sand molds used for casting is very important. This allows the complete recovery of the sand and provides a great increase in speed in making the mold, which otherwise must be slowly dried and cured with hot air. 

Since USM mills can be used on these multipurpose milling machines, the micro milling process is considered a flexible manufacturing process. In addition, the process is characterized by low setup costs, unlimited part materials, and a high material removal rate (Ozel et al. 2011). It is, for example, used to machine small features in molds used for mass production (e.g., microfluidic devices), to structure medical implants for better biocompatibility, to generate deep x-ray lithography masks, and to manufacture prototypes rapidly as well as efficiently (Aurich et al. 2012). 

These two demands on the injection molding tool are thus fundamentally different. Therefore, there can also be great structural differences between molds used for the processing of thermoplastics and those employed for the processing of reactive molding compounds.
