Acoustic Coupling When the shell-side fluid is a low-density gas, acoustic resonance or coupling develops when the standing waves in the shell are in phase with vortex shedding from the tubes. The standing waves are perpendicular to the axis of the tubes and to the direction of cross-flow. Damage to the tubes is rare. However, the noise can be extremely painful. [Pg.1065]

These bubbles interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses and restrict the flow of blood. The effect is extremely painful and can cause paralysis or death. Bromine Bromine, a fourth-row element, is a volatile, reddish liquid rather than a gas like fluorine and chlorine. Uric acid (Fig. 6) is the main nitrogenous waste product of uricotelic organisms (reptiles, birds and insects), but is also formed in ureotelic organisms from the breakdown of the purine bases from DNA and RNA (see Topics FI and Gl). The test chemical should be placed in the conjunctival sac of one eye of each animal after gently pulling the lower lid away from the eyeball. He could only sleep with the aid of sedatives. Being the consummate scientist, Barlow frequently examined his own specimens and kept an almost daily record of his clinical and laboratory observations. For example, in tests of his urine he found he was passing up to 12,000 eggs in each 24-hour sample. Barlow was a very sick man, so sick that he was subjected to extremely painful injections of antimony. Treatment with the heavy metal did clear Barlow of the infection by December 1944. Nitrous oxide is still used because of its rapid action and adding a little of this to other anaesthetics makes less likely another type of accident, that happens when the supply of anaesthetic runs out during the course of an operation and the anaesthetist is unaware of it. As a result, the patient starts to recover consciousness during the operation and consequently suffers extreme pain and trauma. Financial compensation in such cases can be particularly high.
