Extraction Terms

Another group of natural flavoring ingredients comprises those obtained by extraction from certain plant products such as vanilla beans, Hcotice root, St. John s bread, orange and lemon peel, coffee, tea, kola nuts, catechu, cherry, elm bark, cocoa nibs, and gentian root. These products are used in the form of alcohohc infusions or tinctures, as concentrations in alcohol, or alcohol—water extractions termed fluid or soHd extracts. Official methods for their preparation and specifications for all products used in pharmaceuticals are described (54,55). There are many flavor extracts for food use for which no official standards exist the properties of these are solely based on suitabiUty for commercial appHcations (56). [Pg.13]

The next steps consist of the extraction and normalization of terms from the zoned input document. To this end, we apply standard natural language processing techniques and normalize the extracted terms to their canonical form with string manipulations and morphological analysis. The former refers to the treatment of symbols (e.g., dashes), and the latter refers to variations of words due to inflection (e.g., plurals). These steps of information extraction rely on, and make extensive use of, our terminologies and ontologies. [Pg.733]

To create our terminology containing both internal terms and external terms we semiautomatically extract terms from available external resources (e.g., MeSH, EMTREE, UniProt). Then we fit the extracted terms to our data structure and preserve the reference to the source system because sometimes terms are very specific to certain databases. We refer to the terms specific to a database as local terms. These local terms are stored in a dedicated data structure, the Metastore. It must be noted that we refer to accession codes and identifiers used in databases such as UniProt, RefSeq, and GO as local terms (see Tables 31.1 and 31.2). [Pg.733]

Application of SPE to sample clean-up started in 1977 with the introduction of disposable cartridges packed with silica-based bonded phase sorbents. The solid phase extraction term was devised in 1982. The most commonly cited advantages of SPE over liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) as practiced on a macroscale include the reduced time and labor requirements, use of much lower volumes of solvents, minimal risk of emulsion formation, selectivity achievable when desired, wide choices of sorbents, and amenability to automation.
