Extenders modification

The techniques described thus far cope well with samples up to 10 kDa. Molecular mass determinations on peptides can be used to identify modifications occurring after the protein has been assembled according to its DNA code (post-translation), to map a protein structure, or simply to confirm the composition of a peptide. For samples with molecular masses in excess of 10 kDa, the sensitivity of FAB is quite low, and such analyses are far from routine. Two new developments have extended the scope of mass spectrometry even further to the analysis of peptides and proteins of high mass. 

Mercury layers plated onto the surface of analytical electrodes serve as Hquid metal coatings. The pressure sensors discussed herein are reasonably accurate for measurement into the low vacuum region. Upon some modification, these sensors can be extended into the lower end of the range, to approximately 1.3 x 10 Pa (10 torr). Vacuum gauges ate required for accurate measurement of lower pressures. 

Research Trends. Research since the late 1970s appears to have centered on further process modifications and optimization of conventional processes, reduction in pollution, evaluation of potentially more efficient processing technology, increased use of less expensive softwood sources to extend the available hardwood suppHes, and accommodation of recycled newspaper pulp (see Recycling, paper).

The University of Veszprem in Hungary extended UCKRON with the water-gas shift reaction. This modification, which has six steps in its mechanism, is called the VEKRON test problem. (Arva and Szeifert 1989). 

Helix-loop-helix (b/HLH) transcription factors are either heterodimers or homodimers with basic a-helical DNA-binding regions that lie across the major groove, rather than along it, and these helices extend into the four-helix bundle that forms the dimerization region. A modification of the b/HLH structure is seen in some transcription factors (b/HLH/zip) in which the four-helix bundle extends into a classic leucine zipper. 

The two step cooling example given above can in theory be extended to multi-step cooling of the turbine. The Henegar modification of the Friedlander reaction has been recently reported. The A-Boc protected derivative of o-aminobenzaldehyde (25, in this case prepared via directed ortho metallation of 24) is a stable, crystalline compound that can be stored for extended periods (in contrast with 4, which typically is freshly prepared). Treatment of 25 with ketone 26 in acetic acid results in deprotection of the aniline in situ and subsequent formation of 27, an intermediate in the synthesis of mappicine.
