Rotogravure printing is an example of a proeess industry with solvent exposures. The process is, in principle, closed but emissions take place fi om the openings for the paper web. The workers do not need to stay in the immediate vicinity of the emission sources but can often spend most of their time in the clean control room. X-ray diffraction has been applied to certain AB cements. For example. Crisp et al. (1979), in a study of silicate mineral-poly(acrylic acid) cements, used the technique both to assess the purity of the powdered minerals employed and to monitor mineral decomposition in mixtures with poly(acrylic acid), in order to indicate whether or not cement formation had taken place. They employed Cu radiation passed through a nickel filter for most of the samples, a seven-hour exposure time was found to be adequate for the development of a discernible diffraction pattern. In another study, rats were either exposed to hexachlorocyclopentadiene vapors for 1 h, or were dosed orally with " C-hexachlorocyclopentadiene in corn oil. Tissue, urine, and feces samples were analyzed, as well as expired air, to assess the fate and retention time. Approximately 84% of the inhaled compound is retained. Inhaled " C-hexachloro-cyclopentadiene was excreted in the urine orally administered " C-hexachlorocyclopentadiene was eliminated in the feces. In rats exposed by inhalation, the trachea and lung had the highest residue accumulation. In animals receiving oral doses kidneys and liver were major sites of accumulation. Patches are essentially spot or grab samples (typically 25 cm ) of the skin, whereby dermal exposure is assessed by extrapolating the patch loading level to the surface of the entire body. Given that only a small area of exposed skin is covered by the patches used, the uncertainties in calculating true exposure are likely to be high. Furthermore, the exposure pattern may vary with time, with activities, and both within and between individuals, days and shifts. However, several field studies have shown that this technique is a useful tool in the identification and evaluation of dermal exposures to a range of workplace contaminants and in the assessment of the effectiveness of personal protective equipment (Fenske et al. 1990). [Pg.85]

Maternal depressive symptoms are associated with neurodevelopmental patterns of reduced arousal and increased stress. Among 13 808 screened subjects from Honolulu, 1632 were eligible and 176 mothers were enrolled prenatal metamfetamine exposure combined with maternal depression was not associated with any additional neurodevelopmental differences [35 ]. Since only the biological mothers were included in the study, the sample size was limited, because several infants who had been exposed to metamfetamine were placed in foster care or the care of relatives, so that data from their biological mothers was not assessed. [Pg.7]
