In child custody cases, protracted fact finding can also modify what cs the child s 1 merest. Since courts place great emphasis on the continuity of the child-parent relationship, (here is a presumption, which grows stronger as the case drags on, in favor of the parent who has lemporaiy custody. [Pg.34]

Child custody bargaining can be used as an illustration. Here... [Pg.144]

Hair test results have been submitted as evidence in child custody cases, military court-martials, adoption and probation revocation proceedings, and unemployment compensation cases in the U.S. courts. Preemployment hair testing has been upheld as a legitimate component of a drug-free work environment plan. [Pg.14]

Instances of "self-serving conceptions of impartiality" are numerous. Some turn upon outcome-oriented considerations, others on considerations of fairness. In conflicts over child custody, each parent is often convinced that he or she will be the better custodial parent, that is, will bring about the best outcome for the child whose welfare is supposed to be the impartial value promoted by society. "I only want what is best for the child, and it just so happens that it will be best for the child to stay with me." It follows that each parent will tend to think, at least under the "best-interest" standard, that he or she is more likely to be granted custody by the court in case of litigation hence more litigation will be undertaken than if the parents had non-self-serving conceptions of what the interest of the child requires. Below I cite experimental evidence that supports these implications. [Pg.357]

Covalent bonds form when atoms share electrons. Since electrons move very fast they can be shared, effectively filling or emptying the outer shells of the atoms involved in the bond. Such bonds are referred to as electron-sharing bonds. An analogy can be made to child custody the children are like electrons, and tend to spend some time with one parent and the rest of their time with the other parent. In a covalent bond, the electron clouds surrounding the atomic nuclei overlap. [Pg.28]

Municipal social services are the local authority in each of Sweden s 290 municipalities. They are mainly responsible for social work services (e.g. child custody services, substance abuse services, mental health services) but they are also responsible for social assistance, which is the financial benefit scheme for those not entitled to support from other social security systems. Social assistance is considered the last form of financial support in Sweden. [Pg.265]

Maternal depressive symptoms are associated with neurodevelopmental patterns of reduced arousal and increased stress. Among 13 808 screened subjects from Honolulu, 1632 were eligible and 176 mothers were enrolled prenatal metamfetamine exposure combined with maternal depression was not associated with any additional neurodevelopmental differences [35 ]. When adjusted for co-variates, metamfetamine exposure was associated with lower arousal and higher lethargy scores. Only 136 biological mothers with child custody (50 of whom had used metamfetamine) had the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) administered at 1 month. The NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) was administered to the neonate within the first 5 days of fife by an examiner blinded to metamfetamine exposure. There were several limitations to this study. The severity of depression in the mothers was assessed not at the neonatal visit but after 1 month. Since only the biological mothers were included in the study, the sample size was limited, because several infants who had been exposed to metamfetamine were placed in foster care or the care of relatives, so that data from their biological mothers was not assessed. [Pg.7]
