The worst hazard scenarios (excessive temperature and pressure rise accompanied by emission of toxic substances) must be worked out based upon calorimetric measurements (e.g. means to reduce hazards by using the inherent safety concept or Differential Scanning Calorimetry, DSC) and protection measures must be considered. If handling hazardous materials is considered too risky, procedures for generation of the hazardous reactants in situ in the reactor might be developed. Reactivity. A material is considered to be a reactive hazardous waste if it is normally unstable, reacts violently with water, generates toxic gases when exposed to water or corrosive materials, or if it is capable of detonation or explosion when exposed to heat or a flame (40 CFR 261.23). Materials that are defined as forbidden explosives or class A or B explosives by the Department of Transportation are also considered reactive hazardous waste. [Pg.139]

The characteristics of a chemical or substance that would categorize it as a reactive material include (1) it reacts violently with water, (2) it forms potentially explosive mixtures with water, or (3) when mixed widi water or other chemicals, it generates toxic gases, vapors or fumes in a quantity sufficient to present a danger to human health or the environment. Because water is the most common fire suppressant, the characteristic of reactivity is especially relevant since the application of water to eliminate or prevent the spread fires may be counterpro-ductive rather than helpful. Several categories of chemicals will be discussed from this standpoint however, several of these same chemicals also present additional hazards. [Pg.212]
